1] I am amused by Oliver Hall's statements on Flipside, a 'youth' news show
on TV2 -
http://flipside.nzoom.com/flipside_detail/1,2359,271649-212-223,00.html.
Oliver equates Jonathan and I and nztabloid.com to the two gay men who owned
the dog that mauled the little girl last year, and the P smoking gay teacher
who may or may not have molested his pupils. Yes, I think to myself, we do
live in a small country and such small things happen in it. And oddly I am
quite happy with the comparison. Well, someone had to do it, I think to
myself... but more than anything, I am amused. There is obviously more in
the world, I want to say to Oliver, than is encompassed by your
philosophy...

2] After painting a rather beautiful 'Hotere', a Black Window, I have moved
John onto doing a 'McCahon'. 'I think I want a 'Am I Scared, Boy (eh)' I
said, finally, after long consideration, and John purchased a canvas
yesterday, and now, at 8:00am in the morning, he is busy applying a black
ground. I think I'll ask for another McCahon, a North Otago landscape
perhaps, and then I'll move him on to a Hammond, one with his bird-headed
figures in it....

3] Samuel is marking the university assignments of his pupils, going through
them methodically, marking one question through them all, then beginning
again for the next. Occasionally he makes a sigh of exasperation. He is
sitting in an armchair in Julian's house which he is housesitting for the
two month duration of Julian's trip through the USA and Europe. I am
sprawling on the carpet. I was reading magazines but now I'm just sitting
there smoking, listening to the first of the Bach Cello Suites by Pierre
Fournier, a digital rerecording of the old Archiv one. I have had two beers.
I am almost happy here. 'Well, this one gets a big zero,' says Samuel.

4] Jean-Paul Melville's Un Flic is a beautiful movie. The beginning on the
rain saturated frontage of a French beach resort is nothing short of
spectacular. The austere greys of Melville's palette are lovely in this late
last movie. I watch it in bed with John. It has a beautiful mannerism about
it. There is an unblinking style of acting that renders it mechanical as the
plot unwinds which distances the viewer from the subject. Alain Delon's
occasional outbursts of violence are just as mannered as a kabuki play.

Heh, snap. My dear partner is about to start on a Rita Angus at the moment,
well a RA version of the view down the road.

Appropriation is the theme of her art class, and I have put my foot down for
something cheery for the walls (its declared a therapy-free zone), so a Rita
Angus it is. My first choice was a Stanley Spencer with something to replace
the religious imagery - probably something queer would fit. But I think she
has decided she wants to do something kiwi so Stanley is out.

Nooo, I'm not a fan myself - I think I'd have nightmares if one of those was
in the house.

I want a Seraphine Pick - but I'll probably settle for a Gretchen
Albrecht. I might just about manage the broad swathes.

We did look at Seraphine Pick tonight....seeing as how the McCahon took two
hours with John even applying the paint-splatters pedantically...and
Gretchen.... He said 'Well I COULD do an Albricht' ....I'll let you know
what comes next.

Rita did a number of Nelson landscapes.... I had a look at her earlier, but
a Woolaston might be nice...as John said 'A nice BIG Woolaston....'

Um, I actually almost want to ask about the religious imagery. I sleep,
under sufference, in a room with two 19th Century chromolithographs of
Jesus and Mary, and I have managed to exile around 50 Virgins (including an
aboriginal one) to the garage. I do rather like S Maria de Perpetuo Succursu
which is in the hallway though.... I drew the line at crucifixes. But I did
point out to John a shop in Kingsland whose prices would mean that his
entire collerction (Little Infants of Prague included) would add up to $2
000or $3000 worth of iconography....

No, you wouldn't....McCahon is good. And Hammond is hieratic rather than
scary.

Mmm, she did a short workshop here in Nelson last year, but my partner has
more of a lust for sculpture so instead opted for the Jeff Thomson
workshop - what a treat that was!

No, cant say I like McCahon at all - I havent seen any magic in any of his
I've seen but thats just my humble opinion... the nation seems to like him
but I cant figure it out myself. I like Hotere a lot though...

and Hammond - maybe its just coloured by seeing an exhibition of his in the
Wellington Art Gallery - a whole room of bird head paintings was maybe
overload. Put me right off.
