This is a list of new books added to the suburban
branches. These and a wider range of titles, including
more specialised books, are also available at the Central
Library.

NEW ZEALAND

RELIGIONS OF NEW ZEALANDERS 200.931

This book offers a factual, informative introduction to the many
faiths and spiritual paths in Aotearoa/New Zealand. This
collection of essays shows that religion and cultural expression
go hand in hand, and reflect on evolving society of many
cultures.

KEITH, Hamish. A lovely day tomorrow : New Zealand in the 1940s 306.409931

New Zealand free-lance writer and art consultant Hamish Keith,
takes an evocative look at how we lived during the 1940s - from
the war years and its after effects, to the state house, house
design and furnishings, transport, entertainment, fashions and
food.

An interesting look at life in New Zealand in the 1960s - the
golden years of prosperity and freedom. This well illustrated
book discusses the beginning of television, the first man on the
moon, the Beatles, suburban homes and furnishings, the advent of
shopping malls, open plan living, the Mary Quant fashion and the
hippie era.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE 331.133

In 1987 the Human Rights Commission responded to the increasing
demand for information and resources by publishing a sexual
harassment kit. This updated booklet contains some of that
material with key additions and amendments. It is written for
employers and people working in human resources and provides
information on sexual harassment and employers' legal
obligations.

NELSON, Anne. Nga Waka Maori : Maori canoes 387.21

This well-researched and extensively illustrated book discusses
the origins, development and spiritual significance of Maori
canoes, and waka racing in pre- and post-European times. Also
profiled are some of the war canoes that were constructed for the
1990 celebrations.

JOHNSON, P. and BROOKE, P. Wetland plants in New Zealand 481.9931

An excellent field guide that illustrates both the native and
naturalised plants of New Zealand's bogs, swamps, estuaries and
lakes. There are 531 line drawings which are complemented by the
text describing key features, distributions and habitats.

SALMON, J.T. Native New Zealand flowering plants 582.13

Public appreciation of our natural heritage of native plants,
many of which are unique and many threatened with extinction,
should be enhanced after reading this informative and beautifully
illustrated book on native flowering plants. It shows the
flowers and the fruits of native plants - from the seaside
through scrub and forest to the open spaces and mountains.

WADE DOAK'S WORLD OF NEW ZEALAND FISHES 597

This well illustrated book is the result of the author's
intensive studies of the community of reef fishes around the Poor
Knights Islands, a marine reserve off New Zealand's northern
coast.

BURTON, David. New Zealand food and how to cook it 641.59931

David Burton - New Zealand food writer, journalist and food
historian, has assembled recipes that make up the distinctive
culinary tradition of New Zealand e.g. tohera soup, pavlova,
Anzac biscuits, pikelets, Colonial Goose and hangi- cooked food.
Water-colour illustrations and a history of the area in which the
fish or food is found adds to the interesting information in this
book.

GILL, Linda. Gretchen Albrecht 759.9931 ALB[GIL]

A collection of Gretchen Albrecht's most recent paintings which
shows how the artist's work has developed out of discoveries made
in earlier paintings. A chronology is listed as well as dates of
individual exhibitions, group exhibitions, awards and
commissions, public collections, and books and articles which
contain further information about the artist.

HENDERSON, Gil. Surfcasting : a New Zealand guide 799.16

In this concise guide to fishing from beaches and off the rocks,
Gil Henderson explains about selecting equipment, rod-building,
how to cast, rigging tackle and baits, where to go fishing in New
Zealand, and how to play and land fish.

LITERARY MISCELLANY

DOUGLAS, George. The Smart magazines 051

This book contains a series of historical profiles of some of the
most memorable magazines ever to be published in America, half a
century ago. They have been called "smart magazines" designed
for smart sets or social elites. Some of the magazines mentioned
are: Vanity Fair, Esquire and New Yorker.

PFAFF, Daniel. Joseph Pulitzer II and the Post-Dispatch : 070.92 PUL[PFA]
a newspaperman's life

Readers with a strong interest in newspaper history will be drawn
to this biography of the son of Joseph Pulitzer, who founded the
vast and mighty newspaper empire. This volume contains numerous
quotes, illustrations, and excerpts from letters - all of which
capture the flavour of the time - early nineteenth century.

RESTON, James. Deadline 070.92

The author provides a solid summary of his days covering the
London blitz, being chief Washington correspondent during the
Cold War, and achieving executive editorship in 1968.

TAKI. High life 082

Taki's "High Life" column has appeared weekly in the Spectator
since 1977, except for three months when he was in prison on drug
possession. Taki's articles are full of outrageous exploits,
scandal and misdemeanours.

EVANS, Colin H. Writing for radio 808.066

The author has written for BBC Television and radio, and gives
useful advice on how to write for radio. As it gains its effect
solely from the sound of words, Evans shows how to put them
together in order to achieve maximum impact. He discusses how to
produce a full drama script, characterisation, plotting and
structure.

HUMES, James. The Sir Winston method 808.51

Humes who has written speeches for every president since
Eisenhower and has also written a biography of Churchill,
combines his two fortes in this book, intended to assist leaders
in all fields to improve their speaking via examples used by
Britain's great wartime leader - Winston Churchill.

DILLARD, Annie. The writing life 818

The author tells why there is nothing more satisfying than being
alone in a room with a work in progress, making thousands of
decisions that go into the shaping of a book.

SPENDER, Dale. Heroines 820.80353

A contemporary anthology of Australian women writers of fiction,
drama, poetry, journalism, TV scripts and non-fiction. The
authors reflect on their heroines - ordinary and extraordinary
women, mothers, detectives, old women, teenagers, sisters,
lesbians, rural and urban women.

STEWART, Mary. Frost on the window 821

Popular novelist Stewart collects several "verses of youth" that
she wrote prior to turning her hand to fiction in 1950, along

ALDISS, Brian. Bury my heart at W.H. Smith's : a writing life 823

Science fiction writer Brian Aldiss is an expert on the

WILLIAMS, Anita. The 50+ traveler's guide book 910.202

The aim of this book is to assist individuals in filling their
lives with excitement, education, and new experiences - "growing
rather than growing old". For those wanting to travel through
America, this book is a useful guide for addresses of hotels,
resorts, cruises, and guided tours.

FISHER, James. Sherpas : reflections on change in Himalayan Nepal 915.496

The impact of modern education and mass tourism on contemporary
Sherpa society is traced; the author attempts to describe change
as the Sherpas see and experience it.

JONES, Tristan. To venture further : an incredible 915.93
journey across the waterways of Thailand

After losing a leg, Jones, a Welsh adventurer, sets out to cross
the Isthmus of Kra in Thailand. He assembles a crew consisting
of three handicapped Thai youths and a young German student; the
intrepid travellers use courage and determination to overcome
language and physical barriers.

SCHEER, George F., III Booked on the morning train : a journey 917.3
through America

Wondering what remained of the great tradition of cross-country
travel, Scheer spent six weeks swaying, and rocking on Amtrak
trains. Starting in North Carolina, he travelled to New Orleans,
St Louis, Austin, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Sante Fe, Seattle,
etc. He talks to people on the train from all walks of life, and
relates local lore and conversations.

HIGA, Tomiko. The girl with the white flag 940.535229

This book tells the moving story of the climax of the battle in
Southern Okinawa in 1945 involving the American Forces. It is
told from the perspective of a seven-year-old girl, the author,
who struggled against the odds to survive and lead others to
survival.

COLLAR, Hugh. Captive in Shanghai 940.547252

A firsthand account of the experiences of the foreign community
in Shanghai under Japanese occupation, seen through the eyes of
Hugh Collar, the defacto head of the British community. He was
from 1942-1945 chief representative in an internment camp for
"prominent" persons and "dangerous criminals" in the city.

EASTON, Robert. Love and war : Pearl Harbour through V-J day 940.548173

Jane and Robert Easton were a young Californian couple in their
twenties, married for 18 months, when Robert enlisted in the Army
in 1942. For the next three and a half years, with the exception
of a few meetings and phone calls, they communicated by letter.
The letters gathered here present a tender and realistic portrait
of life at home and abroad during World War II.

OWEN, David. Time to declare 941.085092

British Labour politician David Owen, writes about his period as
a young doctor, as Navy Minister and Health Minister, and of his
handling of Rhodesia and relations with Washington, Iran, and the
Falklands during his period as Foreign Secretary.

BICKEL, Lennard. Australia's first lady B MACA

This books tells of the life and experiences of Elizabeth
Macarthur, the first free lady to settle in Australia. Much of
her husband John Macarthur's role in Australian history -
especially his part in the overthrow of Governor Bligh - is seen
here through the eyes of his wife.

CAMPBELL, James. Talking at the gates B BAL

Campbell, who was a friend of Baldwin's during the latter part of
his life, offers a moving record of his personality and work. He
reveals much about writings that were unpublished or unfinished
at the time of Baldwin's death, and covers incidents from his
early years as a writer and recounts the charges that Baldwin
confronted as a black, a homosexual, an exile, and a writer.

FULLIER, Roy. Spanner and pen B FUL

The title of Roy Fuller's post-war memoir comes from a poem by
Norman Cameron, and signifies the double life led by the author -
in literature and public affairs. His long career as a poet and
also as a lawyer and a director are related along with his
fluctuating relations with publishers. He gives a series of
portraits of friends and neighbours who were poets.

LAMAR, Jake. Bourgeois blues B LAM

Lamar grew up in a black middle-class home, had a good education
and was a journalist for Time magazine. He writes about the
conflicts he had with his father who was tyrannical and cruel,
muses on inter-racial relationships, and traces his experience
with racism in the 1980s.

MARTIN, Ralph. Henry and Clare : an intimate portrait of the Luces B LUC

This biography delves into the chilly marriage of Henry Robinson
Luce, the founder of the Time-Life magazine empire, and Clare
Booth Brokaw, a former managing-editor of Vanity Fair, a
playwright, a congresswoman, and first female U.S. ambassador to
Italy. This vivid account relates the events of the day, evoking
both the corporate culture established by Luce, and the popular
culture of the time.
