My thoughts exactly. And why should it be disloyal?
But bugger the yachting, what a great summer's day it is here in
Auckland today. Trust summer to bloom at its fullest when the kids are
back at school.

A cricket match vs Australia.
Apparently throwing beer cans at the winning team helps even up the
score! :^)

Surely you mean a cricket match vs New Zealand?

For something that is so boring you spend a lot of time taking notice and
winging about it....go get a life, find a hobby, do something positive for
yourself and then maybe you'll see the world in a more positive way.

What sort of an illiterate are you atPRICK?
Economically illiterate - the state has already stolen your money through
tax to develop the viaduct basin and won't need to spend any more money
doing so. More money will flow into the country in 3 or 4 years time if we
win and there will be extra tax taken by the govt then if the Libz aren't
in.
Grammatically illiterate - read your original post.

I agree. I much prefer contests which are close. I think it's better
excitement for all concerned.

Troll.
Call it wasted to the people employed to do the work. I'm sure they don't
see it as a waste.
Hello, Brigid, I have just put a face to your name. You were at

No Patrick, don't avoid the issue. Tell us how you will tell the
people who have received employment from this venture why
it has been a waste of money!
I have seen no proof that any long time jobs of value equalling the
waste of taxes and Aucklands rates have come from the rich boy's
bludgers cup.
On the contrary I have seen Team NZ destroy jobs in their role as
Korean red sock importers.
If it is jobs we want { and we do } we should have used the millions
of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ wasted on the rich boys boring cup to create them
and cut out the transient middlebludgers.

Great Janice, it is sad that their are still people in this group who
think the free market nasty nats philosophy of greed is a valid way of

When are they going to join the rest of us and embrace the new era of

Why not explain to Prada that they should pull up their anchor
before they race ?
Indeed.
As far as I can see, the America's cup in NZ has generated work and
jobs for many people in at least the following businesses in and
around Auckland:
boat builders
sail makers
marine chandlers
earth movers
harbour workers
banks
architects
builders
painters and decorators
sign writers
restaurant workers
security officers
software and multimedia producers
broadcasters
journalists
hotel workers
water taxi owner/operators
travel agents
taxi drivers
and undoubtedly many more.
In addition there is a spin off in other regions as people who came to
Auckland for the cup visit other places. I saw people in Franz Joseph
wearing merchandise they purchased at the cup village.

And I heard a radio interview the other day with our diplomat in
Italy. Suddenly we are being taken seriously over there by business
and tourism people. The effect of the cup on our profile in Europe
would be easily worth whatever the government has put into it.
P.S. "I hate everyone and I bet the weather sucks" :)

Following the can throwing incident, there was a lovely Tremain
cartoon in yesterday's EP. It had three Aussies (hats with dangling
corks) leaning on a bar discussing the hard time the kiwis were giving
the Aussie cricketers. "Yeah," says the second one, "dangerous
creature, the kiwi." "Right," says the third, "out of the three and a
half million of 'em, only 11 don't pose some kind of threat."

Or alternatively make those on the dole work, cut the DPB and use that money
to "create" jobs (though how one "creates" jobs for people who dropped out of
college is beyond me)

Just the usual practice we use to encourage visitors to spend another
night enjoying our food, scenery and climate. It should be interpreted
as a sign of affection and admiration.
Absolutely. That and a few well placed government dollars;)

Pardon me if I never take up Kelvin on his kind offer of a bbq and a few
beers at his place!
This is false.
Whilst I think it was 'poor form' to get them supplied from offshore,
particularly as their marketing strategy was to invoke patriotism to support
their cause, I think it unlikely that several hundred thousand red socks
would have been made and sold in NZ if Team NZ did not create the demand in
the first place. Therefore, Team NZ did not destroy jobs by importing red
socks, they simply failed to create extra work for local sock manufacturers.

Caring ????...that is something that comes without qualification or

I see that left wing ideal have not worked either...and the failures
have been more spectacular. There are many things that should be based
on the free market and the government should keep the hell out, however
there is also a need for social responsibility. Being rich and
successfull does NOT mean that you are ripping anyone off, and if you
can then afford some extravegances...so be it. To a poor family in
ethiopia you are living in luxury...its all a matter of perspective.
However the free market has nothing to do with you dolefull view of the
world, that is entirely free market...you can either hate the world or
rejoice in its oppotunities...I have selected the later path.
>

Nor can you because you choose not to see. The fact that we have more
tourists comming he means what ?, the fact that we have the 6th largets
luxury boat building industry mean what ?, the fact that many of the
teams are booking now for the next cup...and are panning to be here for
atleat 3-4 years preaparing, the fact that a run down area has been
substantially upgraded....

Bullsh1t....How many jobs ??? as compared to how many are working in
other industries.

So who do want to create these real long term jobs...can YOU do it..or
are you wanting the nasty horrible rich people whom you hate without
logical reason to do it for you...so you can then hate them more because
they are now more successfull. The government cannot create real long
term jobs...history has shown this...only you cannot see you are so
blinded by jelosy.
If you look hard enough in only the direction you want to see, the that
is all you will see.
>I have seen no proof that any long time jobs of value equalling the
>waste of taxes and Aucklands rates have come from the rich boy's

There is of course a huge short and middle term surge in employment:
restaurants, taxis, accomodation, the building work around the viaduct
etc. Long term, the cup has provided a huge fillip to our boatbuilding
industries and many associated ones: stainless steel work, high tech
welding etc. As well, there has been a huge increase in our technical
knowledge in many of these fields which has increased our
competitiveness when bidding for work in areas quite unrelated to the
cup.
>On the contrary I have seen Team NZ destroy jobs in their role as
>Korean red sock importers.
Seeing as the socks were not going to be manufactured except for the
cup, I can't see how they actually destroyed jobs. Going offshore may
have prevented one or two short term NZ jobs being created, maybe.

One of the incalculable spinoffs has been the publicity we have got in
Italy, and to a lesser extent, the rest of Europe. Before, if we were
known at all, it was for 15 guys thundering around a paddock with
their IQs on their backs. But several times a week now we have a free
(better than that! They're paying for it!) 3 hour TV advertisement
watched by *huge* numbers of Italians. They see us being good at
design, high tech manufacture, disciplined team work. They see we are
up to the mark working under pressure. They see that our boat looks as
classy and well presented as even theirs does. They see a modern,
attractive city (and this is one time when I don't mind appearances
being deceptive) and a stunning harbour. In the middle of their winter
they see weather so fine and calm that the racing is often called off.
They watch TV broadcasts which are technically as good as anything in
the world. They see sports animations better than anything else in the
world. And they have their own commentators so they aren't even put
off by Pete. The cup is changing the way we are viewed in the world
and the spin-offs in exports and tourism is potentially vast.
Team NZ did not destroy jobs by importing red
>socks, they simply failed to create extra work for local sock manufacturers.

Nevertheless I think it was a pretty poor show getting the socks made
in Korea and not in NZ. They had 4 or 5 years to get them made here so
they can't say they didn't have the time. If they expected NZers to
show their patriotism and support by wearing red sock then Peter Blake
and his merry men should have shown the way.
On another tack. It's a bit ironic that there's no wind for the races
when Aucklanders are full of the stuff!
Ray Dobson
Which more or less exactly paraphrases what I said in the first part of my
post. You could have saved yourself a lot of work by simply not snipping
mine!
>I have seen no proof that any long time jobs of value equalling the
>waste of taxes and Aucklands rates have come from the rich boy's
>bludgers cup.
I keep wondering who these "rich boys" are? I can't see any crew
member of either boat who looks particularly rich. Certainly all the
members of Team NZ are average Kiwis with average backgrounds, who
just happen to be high achievers when it comes to sailing. The Italian
syndicate head has plenty of money, but we can't really run an
international sporting event and then ban competitors depending on the
value of the things they own.
I suppose some of the spectators and supporters might be rich, and
they'd be getting fairly cheap entertainment. However, looking at the
enormous crowds that welcomed back Team NZ from San Diego, NZ would
have to be a lucky country to support so many rich people.
