The Emission Trading Scheme will transfer money from the many to
enrich the few.
Follow the money

Perhaps some economist can explain to us how the Emission Trading
Scheme will works.
As I see it, we the taxpayers will pay higher taxes on petrol and
power and whatever else the government can think of in the future. The
govt then gives hundreds of millions of dollars to businesses that
generate CO2 such as Comalco. I'm not clear about the next bit but I
think Comalco buys carbon credits with some of that money. The rest
they keep.
After companies or anyone else has bought carbon credits, the price
could go way down or way up because of speculators with $100 billion
dollars to spend on money shuffling.
There are plenty of markets for commodities such as coffee and pork
bellies for example. But those commodities do have a value. They are
products which many people buy and use up, and more are produced in a
predictable way. The law of supply and demand applies.
Even the futures markets depend on commodities with a real value that
doesn't fluctuate too wildly. People can make informed decisions on
how to price those products, e.g. depending on the weather.
Carbon trading is entirely different. The commodity, carbon, has no
value at all. Nobody wants the damn stuff because there are huge
amounts of it all over the world. Of the carbon possibly accessible to
humans, 79.94% of it is in limestone deposits, 19.98% of it is in
sediments, 0.05% is in the sea, 0.001% is in the air.
There are tiny amounts in other places.
So the carbon that is being traded is of no value. That means that
speculators are able to push the price up and down and make huge
profits. The rest of the carbon trader suckers will miss out every
time.
Has an economist worked out what will happen with this new method of
money shuffling? I'll bet they have not, or they will get it wrong.
Like they got the world economy wrong recently. How soon you forget.
Remember Enron? Is Madoff allowed to trade while in jail for the next
100 years? Those are the kinds of people who will get involved in
carbon trading.
And the mostly ignorant NZ MPs, left and right, think an Emission
Trading Scheme is OK. They don't understand it but everyone else is
doing it or are going to, they think.
It's time NZ stood up against the world and said that carbon trading
is a bad thing, and that CO2 in the air is OK as it makes trees and
grass grow faster, and that AGW is nonsense.
NZ led the world with votes for women, nuclear bomb ban etc and we
should do it again. The rest of the world will thank us for it in a
few years.
Let's have a referendum of whether we should have an ETS. I'll bet
over 80% would say no. And they will be the people who will vote out
National if this goes wrong as it will. I'm not saying that Labour is
any better.
Or, to put it another way. Armageddon is nigh, the world is
burning, the seas are invading, civilisation as we know it is in
danger, the human race is in peril and we decide to play trading
games with one of the worlds most plentiful and worthless
substances..
Somewhere in Hell the Devil is saying "OK, Nero, you and your
fiddle are outta here, we've found lots of people to take your
place."

What worries me is Patsies finally speaking out against his glorious Labour
party. Maybe theirs hope for us all still.
