Man, the new flagship Dimdows command line is ugly

Can’t you choose a better font? Colour scheme? Tabbing?
No you can’t, because this command line has to provide its own GUI, and
you’re stuck with it. You don’t have a choice of terminal front-ends,

While rereading Jason Perlow’s series commemorating the Apollo space

I’ve been watching the hoo-hah over this with some bemusement. It was a bit
of a shock to hear that even Richard Stallman had lost faith in the ability
of his own GPL to keep MySQL free.
Seems like Eben Moglen (chief formulator of the GPL) is one of the few still
keeping a level head

Sometimes its useful to have someone to ask idiot questions and elicit a

Copy and paste are error prone. Besides, it is not as simple as that.

Servers are cheap. People, especially experienced people, aren't. A
couple of VMs would cost a few hours work and a couple of licenses. A
script to properly handle scheduling and rolling out patches would take
weeks to write and would need to be constantly updated as things change
and would cost me hours of someone's time.

Only in the simplest of cases. In some cases you might have production
boxes tied to a specific release of your distro of choice. You ought to
get out more, Lennier.

Rubbish. If I need to put a package on all the servers that is included
on the distros CDs which is not currently in the standard build I don't
need to go back to Redhat to pull it down because it is already there,
and any updates are also there.

To update up to several thousands of *production* *nix boxes you only need one repository.

You make the repository to include entirely and only the software that you have installed on your
servers, and you update it by adding the updated packages.
The repository shouldn't include anything else.
