We've redesigned our Auckland gig guide site: www.mukuna.co.nz Was due for a bit of a tighten-up, after nearly two years of banging on it. It's not yet all the way there, but it's coming along piece by piece. As always, constructive criticism greatly appreciated.

Great work with Makuna. Use it as a brilliant example all over the
show of a great txt application. Looking clean and really easy to
scan. Few suggestions:
I would suggest that you put in a calender so people can quickly
filter or jump to certain days without having to scroll a full page
length.
Also the search, do you find that is a really heavily used piece of
functionality, or do you find users usually browse more than
specifically search. Only reason I ask, is that if you are finding
people are searching more than just browsing I would put it in a more
prominent position, with greater visual dominance. Can feel a bit lost
on the right.
Looking at the venues page - why do you randomize the results? I am
guessing ot make it more fair to everyone in the list to get
highlighted.. Have you thought about selling highlighted venue spots
to venues in this listing page, and then listing the other venue
results in alphabetical order? When looking at a list it is quicker
for a user to scan a list logically ordered than it is to make a user
look at a list then choose to re-order the list with a click.
Also on the venues listing page it may be useful to have a direct link
to a larger map, and maybe offer directions like what mapquet or
google offer. Their API's are relatively easy to integrate and can be
of real benefit to people trying to find a venue.
My quick 2 cents

Thanks.

This one keeps coming up. Calendar coming soon...

People seem to scroll & browse, more than search, but keeping an eye on this.

Exactly.

That page does not yet get enough traffic to monetize, but yes, we're thinking along those lines.

Not perfect, but it's a start. Getting some traction. Moving to Welly
was a good idea. Really digging the vibe here. Keeps reminding us of
San Francisco, a very pleasant surprise. Will hopefully be playing
some late-night, backroom gigs here real soon...
Hey Jeff,
Took me a while to look at the site but then I didn't know you had moved
here. I run the odd public event that needs your site and so having a welly
function should work. In the meantime I've been using eventfinder that
syndicates out all over the place.
Now if an event site could just fill in all the forms for me it would be
great! Jus kiddin, but that's the bug for me, not having someone else to do
that part of eventing. I'm using facebook increasingly, that works really
well.
I spose I need to submit some events now... how about I start with my movie
at NZFA until the 24th? Its actually a MUSIC event, a composition and
performance by Warwick Blair and Sandhya Badakere, with my visuals, plays
24hrs and then repeats. Go and stand in THE LOADING BAY at the NZFA in
Taranaki St anytime of the day or night, and listen. Visuals are better at
night as well...
regards,
Paul Moss

... and we love that you do :)
Our aim is to help event promoters by giving you one place to load your event details, and see it appear everywhere your audience is: the Eventfinder site, Yahoo!Xtra, NZ Herald, Timeout Magazine, MSN, AA Travel, and dozens of smaller sites.
We hit a couple of milestones we're really proud of this week too - 40,000 registered users, and November's Nielsen numbers put us in the top 50 NZ sites with 146,000 UBs. Both of which are great news for promoters listing events.

I think you'll like the Eventfinder redesign (which you'll see before Christmas) Paul. Our new form is the result of three years of hard work trying to make it easier for promoters to use. It'll never be perfect, but every new design works better than the one before.

You know what I always find odd about these kind of sites? the focus
on the names of the bands. Wellington alone is home to hundreds of
bands, half of them change names on a yearly basis and sometimes the
same people are in 3 or 4 bands.
As a consequence, the names mean next to nothing to me. Unless someone
I know personally is in one, I wouldn't recognise a band even if I'd
seen them, let alone at random while browsing for something to go to
see.
It would seem logical that I would search for one of two things: A
genre I like, or a location that is nearby where I plan to be. I can't
say that categorically because I basically never look for gigs, so I'm
just talking out loud really. It's just one of those things that
always struck me as a bit strange. Perhaps other people just recognise
bands a lot?
