Hello all... finding myself on LES this morning with an out of town guest who is interested in procuring "a bunch of loose LEDs" and probably a bunch of batteries (likely to make throwies) ... any thoughts on exactly where in Chinatown I should bring him?

Thanks a bunch...
Marah

Hello all!

Any ideas where to find surface mounted resistors in NYC?

I only need a handful and don't want to have to buy them online.

Regards,

Kevin W

1. Cut a strip of paper (approx. 2cm x 10)
2. Get a #2 pencil
2. Get a pencil sharpener (you will need this to keep exposing the graphite from the pencil)
3. Keep rubbing the pencil to produce a think graphite layer on the paper somewhere in the central region
4. Adjust the length between positive and negative leads via the graphite column on your brand new surface resistor :)))))

har-har :)

This is a tough question and I'd sure like to learn about any local source, too!

Unfortunately, this is the _sole_ reason that I continue to save
discarded PC boards which have SMT parts.

It is straightforward to remove these parts, tho' I am _not_ saying
this is "easy" or "fun".

The real nuisance is locating a suitable part via inspection and then
"half-lift" probing, w/o destroying it, prior to removal.

Components' "clean-up" is rarely a problem for R's, C's, L's, and (3-wire) Q's.
However, many-lead IC's seem generally not worth the "re-work" effort,
as they are often get fried in the process.

NB: There are many _excellent_ videos on YouTube.com for ''surface mount''.
The suggested search terms are very helpful to narrow the large
number of SMT videos.
+
I already knew how to _build_ with SMT, but the steps for "rework"
(=UNbuilding w/o destroying) call for skills I did not have. Mostly,
this is how I learned these techniques, a few years ago. There are now
many more quite helpful videos...: Worth eyeballing!

Agree! I hope someone will post a local vendor that does not have
severe minimums, S/H, etc...

Good luck! Mike

Other than NYCR? No. We have a box with a bunch of different values of
0805 size resistors. But that's just if you need a few, not a real supply.

Come by on Thursday evening and I can hook you up, if you need.

You know, with the word "resistor" in your name, you're going to have to
do much better with regard to stocking resistors.

It's _not_ Chinatown, but I've had good results buying "mixed LEDs" from Jameco's "grab bags".

These selections are probably best for _non_-beginners, who are comfortable with a "make to fit" mindset.

NOTE: Contents can vary considerably from purchase to purchase, although the quantity is always accurate.

To see their selections, go to...: jameco.com

and search _exactly_ for this PASTE-in...: led grab bag

These -- and Jameco's _other_ "grab bag" items -- are a good resource for the more-advanced builder...

Enjoy! Mike
