Hello-

I work for a small photography studio.  I'm currently attempting to upgrade how we share image files and am looking at different servers so we can access the images remotely.  Does anyone have any IT experience with setting up servers for a small office?  (maximum of four users)

I am putting together a quote for my boss, so if anyone is interested, please email me with your rates.  Also, please email me any questions if I've left out some key information.

Thanks!
Allyson

Hi Allyson -

I admin both Linux and Windows servers but I am better with Linux ones. I can try to answer any questions you might have.

A Linux box would be ideal. Any old low power box, maybe RAID 1. Shared via SAMBA over the LAN. Do you need access across the internet, or just local access?

If all you plan on doing is file sharing, you could get a NAS box such as these:

http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/home-and-small-office-nas/linkstation-duo
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/home-and-small-office-nas/linkstation-pro-duo-1

For the remote access you could get a small firewall with VPN support such as:

http://www.sonicwall.com/us/products/TZ_100.html

This will allow selected computers to access your files using VPN.

Regards,

Mauricio A.

Yes, If your computers are already networked, just go get a NAS, it's not rocket science to setup, just read the manuals.

I use synology for storage and sharing; it is a phenomenal storage applicance and may have a VPN add-on if you don't feel like splurging for a separate VPN firewall.

Allyson,

I am currently doing the same with data entry and analysis for a medical research charity called The Cure Is Now. Have experience with Windows Server. Also Oracle VirtualBox, so we can set up a virtual server running on a different host operating system if needed. Worked in NYCT payroll applications for 10+ years. No problem helping you out. Looking to get $500 for the job. Where is the studio located?
