Hey NYC technophiles -

I dont know if something like this has been done, is being done, or even should be attempted, but....

ive been cleaning out my storage unit, moving stuff over to my new studio. Ive realized (big surprise here) that ive got lots of wire-y type crap, and some buttony stuff too - a lot of which i have bought multiple times over.  i hate having lots of crap that i dont immediately need, but is still functional and useful.

What Ive also been thinking that there are maybe people like you who could also need to shed some useful crap, maybe selling/swapping or even giving away perfectly useful items that could be used for whathaveyou...

So i propose this:

Some weekend in April (maybe April 15.16.17) people who are interested can lug their stuff over to my studio (which is also in 1717 troutman - 2nd floor) and we can do the aforementioned thing. Im not adverse to somewhere else, but my studio is free and has space. We could hold maybe 8-10 tables worth of crap before we would need to hold it elsewhere - maybe others in the building will get into the mix.

you can stay to haggle/sell/beg , or maybe we'l figure out some way well sell your shit or something without you... but that is some high level organization that im not going to implement unless lots of people are interested.

things i  will be bringing / hope to see people bringing to this  theoretical thing:

cables
computers and/or parts
pretty much any sort of part to anything electronic or mechanical.
blinky bits and shiny nibbles
fabric
costumy things
instruments/sound gear
lights n layzzors
props
jugglin shit
fire crap
a giant pile of Ataris
bulk wire
art supplies

things i would encourage people not to bring - but there are always exceptions to things like this (you know this)....:

grandma's nick-nacks (or nickers for that matter) - grandma would be very upset, and perhaps cold.
ordinary used household items  - please do not attempt to sell an old dish draining rack or your used whipped cream maker, unless has been modified to be wearable or WIFI actuated.
socks - WTF why are you selling used socks???
live animals
dakimakura

most if not all of the things im selling are in decent and/or functional condition -  At least functional enough to be scrapped for parts. Usefulness is key!

also - Im certainly not going to stop anyone  from selling NEW things, but - this is not primarily a craft show or bazaar.

maybe all the leftovers after the sale we could also do a bulk drop-off at MFTA...

please forward this around to other folks and get in touch

::doctor light::

p.s.: does anyone remember the tech swap/sale that used to happen on the weekends in midtown somewhere in the 30's? Maybe this was about 5-8 years ago....

I'm down, have a handful of stuff I was in the middle of writing up to
post here, anyway, so this could be a fun way to move some of it (some
free, some not!) and socialize.

Oh I love tech swaps!

I've organized tech give-away for the last 6 years. I love seeing
people do this more. Timelapse of EVERY ONE WE'VE HELD at:
http://www.seej.net/create/geek-xmas/

The structure is that its all given away. We go around the table and
each person shows what they've got. If someone wants it, they get it.
If more than one person wants it usually the group determines who
needs it more. If no one wants it, you bring it home.

Good times..

Not sure how much stuff I've got available to bring over, but I'd definitely be interested in stopping by and perhaps buying a few things.
