Hi,

Does anyone know if the graphics card on a Macbook Pro 3.1 (2007 vintage) is user serviceable?

My screen starts glitching and then the whole thing locks up. Possibly overheating, but it even happens freshly restarted under low load. Ideas?

Thanks!
Doug

Nope.  Definitely not user serviceable.

Though depending on specific manufacture date, it might be one of the models affected by the NVidia Computational Distortion Effect.  In which case, Apple will replace the mainboard for free.

Someone recently said that those models are dying in droves because of some problem with the dye in the chips. A friend told me yesterday that he just recently on recommendation took his back to an Apple store with similar issues and they replaced the board because it is a known problem. good luck.

cheers

Yup I checked and it's got the recalled graphics card. I think I did it in with my 3D processing project... it sounds like a jet plane every time I run it...

Thanks for the tip!

I have a MacbookPro3,1 and the fans in it always sound like it is going
to take off (and drain the battery pretty quickly). The video card
hasn't failed yet, although sometimes I get odd artifacts on the DVI
output. Maybe I should take it in.

My MacBook was received in that same period and I get occasional
glitches. Looks like I'm eligible.

Huh, thanks eyescratch.
