Does anyone know where I can get a hot-air soldering station (for SMD work) on the cheap?

Or, can I use someone's for an hour or so?

I got a basic rework station on eBay for $140. When did you need to use it?

what kind is it? can you tell it what temperature to operate at? is it easy to learn how to use? Should I just stick with using through hole?

I'm willing to buy but I'm flying blind on what to purchase and from whom. Would like to buy American!!!

OK I was going to mention baking as an option, have you tried solder wick? That usually works for me when the pins are accessible.

If anyone who attended the showing of "Get Lamp" is opinionated and likes to write,
The editor of SPAG (the Society for the Promotion of Adventure Games)
is looking for someone to write a review of the movie for the upcoming edition.
You can Email SPAG at maher @ Filfre.net or davidm.spag @ gmail.com (you would need to remove the spaces in those email addresses)

Justin,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah, the solder wick worked just fine. In the scheme of things, the SMD soldering thing is almost as easy as through hole. Its just been my first time, so I freaked out!  Thanks for your help!!

my oven ... the solderpaste didn't seem to want to retract until around 300 and 350 degrees

Centigrade?

I recommend toaster ovens for two reasons,

1 they have a gentler slew rate
2 I would never want to eat anything after  soldering in it.

I use a hand-held butane 'pencil' that I got at radio shack. It works
very well with SMD chips! It comes with a soldering tip and a flame
tip. It also works very well for crème brûlée. :)

That soldering iron is the single best thing I've ever gotten from a radioshack.  And not expensive at all.

please excuse brevity, sent from cell.
