Im looking to source a strip (preferably already soldered in series) of tri color leds.  It would also be nice if i could address them individually.  Anyone know if i can get that on the cheap? or if i can get them at all?

thanks,
Jason

Jason, you would not by chance be trying to do a light panel? if so, perhaps we need to get together.

I saw you do photography. I am trying to make a light wall with LEDs but as they are somewhat green I was looking at how iKan is using RGB LEDs to color correct. So was just interested in seeing if that does work.

Any thoughts anyone there?

I am assuming full RGB will give me white light, whatever temperature it maybe. So was also assuming that dimming here and there would color balance what I need. Just playing in my head for the moment. Still need to order some.

well... I am no photographer but:

if you look at the above link you can sort of assume what the "white" light of the tricolour led will be like. Of course you no longer have the blue tint of most regular wight leds, but you still get something very distinct from conventional light sources.

Here, check this out:

Hi All,

An online order got delayed and I find myself in need of some Network Interface Cards
(NICs) that I could get my hands on today.  I'm looking for single-port desktop PCIe Gigabit
Ethernet cards.  I'd prefer to get 3 matching ones, but I'd settle for one at this point.

I was hoping to get a specific make and model:

but again, at this point I'd settle for anything that meets the specs.

I'm in Brooklyn and would like something relatively close by.  I've tried all the usual
big places (J&R, Datavision, ServerSupply, Best Buy) with no luck.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

What do you mean by light wall? Color temperatures are simple to understand but not something easy to correct by trial and error.

Imagine a light panel used in photography, but is 7 feet high. Well that is what ultimately would be, for the moment I am happy with 7 inches.

Yes I need to get a Color Meter, I sold mine years ago.

I seen the wiki link, thanks. The other from Rift is very cool. I think someone here mentioned them before as I remember seeing a beginning of the idea. That is exactly me. I am a commercial photographer who also happens to shoot commercials. While I am used to film, now video is my preferred medium.

It would probably be good, but I like making mistakes and learning from them. So ordered what I need and will report the results, probably in video form. Problem is that I won't get it until early December.

But thanks for offering Darcy.

Hi Carlos,

Nice you are interested in constructing an LED light panel for video. I posted that link about that open source project a few months ago; many products have hit the market from China since. I have even seen them in use by DSLR videographers covering what is happening in downtown Manhattan.

There is a discussion / buying opportunity / review for such panels at this photography discussion site:

Maybe that helps - i.e. you don't have to source individual LED's anymore but can now work with panels to design what you are after. I read in that thread tho that the batteries for powering such panels are still very expensive.

I'm at Craft Night tomorrow with some cheap LED strings I found so maybe see you there.

Watch the specs carefully, usually the cheaper strips are not individually addressable (eg you cant have just one red LED on, you have to have ALL of the red LEDs on or off the same). Usually you can tell by the connections. Individually addressable ones will have something like V+ / GND / data / clock, often mention SPI. Non-addressable ones will have something like R+ / G+ / B+ / GND (or possibly R- / G- / B- / V+)

My issue of the day… man my ears hurt. Does anyone know if there is a sound inline filter that will cut sounds above a specified dB? I am editing a piece that the camera audio goes to the roof when it starts every take, and since I need to take noise out need to monitor with headphones.

Also, any idea for "good" noise canceling headphones? I found these but never heard of them http://www.quietheadphones.com/

Thanks,
Carlos

Hi Carlos- it sounds like you need a compressor or limiter somewhere in your chain.

Look at Universal Audio who make both software and hardware compressors and limiters. My not be what you want (something small you can put between gear and headphones) but you never know.

As for noise-canceling headphones, I have to recommend the Sennheiser
PXC 250 II. I have the original 250, which I scored a couple years ago
for $150. Both these models may be a bit more ideal for the traveler
since they fold up into a nice included compact zipper pouch. Beware
the inline electronics and battery, however...you'll have to rest them
on a table or clip them to an item of clothing, but this keeps the
headphones themselves nice and light, to avoid wearer fatigue.

The PXC 300 and 450 (electronics+batt in the earcup) are available for a
bit more $. Beware that all noise-canceling headphones introduce a
slight "hiss", as far as I'm aware, due to the out-of-phase noise
generation employed in ambient noise-canceling. If hiss is an issue, do
an apples-to-apples comparison at B&H and/or J&R.

Not sure about "professional-grade" noise canceling, but in recent years
I've put my headphone investments mostly in Sennheiser with one
exception: the great-value, closed-back Audio-Technica ATH-M50, which I
use to study in noisy environments.

In an era in which Bose and "Beats Audio" seem to be the most popular
names in headphones, I tend to favor good reviews over marketing hype.
Thus, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Denon, Beyerdynamic, AKG, Ultrasone,
Grado (Go BK!), (Klipsch?,) and even Sony's high-end seem to be the way
to go. I personally just look to audiophiles for good reviews without
aiming to be one myself. (It seems it would be possible to waste a lot
of time testing all the permutations in cabling, drivers, etc.)
www.headphone.com is a great resource.

Good luck,
Barrett

PS - There are no doubt some audiophiles and aviators on this list who
will recommend pricier options. Go for it! I personally am too clumsy
to spend >$300 on a pair of headphones when I know that one day I will
sit on them. At least I'm not recommending the business-traveler
standard Bose QuietComforts! The QuietHeaphones site you cite seems to
make headphones that have decreased in quality as of late...vis. the
Amazon reviews for the EX29.

Thanks all. I have actually decided to try the quiet headphones.com http://www.quietheadphones.com/product/ex-29/ what I have heard is that since its passive attenuation you don't get the hiss. No idea if that is true or not. They are bulky no doubt but is just while I record so won't be on my head all that much at once. Will report when I test them, probably not until Januery.

Thanks again,
Carlos
