I had more metrocards die on me in 2005 than any other year. Well,
none ever did before. The conclusion overall has been the machines
are degenerating, not the cards. They've been in there ten years already.

Mewonders if they ever budgeted maintenance and monitoring of all
the metrocrad readers of if they figured they would all fix themselves?

Oh, they spend plenty maintaining the Metrocard system. But a system
that is sufficiently complicated and finicky (three sets of read/write
heads which must be kept in exact alignment), stuff is going to happen
no matter what.
