...The 60-foot-tall dome was designed by Grimshaw Architects and architectural
glass-whiz James Carpenter; it's being constructed with metal frames and
layered custom steel panels in addition to glass sheathing, and the twisted
patterns are intended to reflect light into the transit center's open spaces.
The project, which has cost $1.4 billion, will be completed in 2014; when it
finally opens, it'll connect eleven subway lines, more than any other station
in the city.

We all know those waist-high balcony railings are going to be supplemented with ugly metal grills thrown together in the Transit Authority shops, for that subway je ne sais quoi.

For what it's worth (and not transit-related) Borough of Manhattan
Community College has 2 entrances to the (rather small, but well-
connected) library. You can enter through the main doors and pass
through the typical security gates, or you can take the upper floor
and walk down a truly graceful spiral stair. (And yes, there are
security gates at the bottom of the steps.)
