LED signs at GCT / R-142s

Just curious if anyone knows ... I've noticed the LED signs on the downtown
Lex platform at Grand Central which display "Waiting for train", counts down
the number of seconds the train is in the station, and then the number of
seconds the train is delayed after something like one minute. Is this part
of an automated signaling system, or just an "informational" message for
the conductor? (or, more likely, to be used for an automated signaling
system at some point in the future?) I haven't noticed these signs in
any other station (not that I have been to anywhere near all stations),
and was curious if this is just a test, or a glimpse into the future ....

Also, what ever happened to the R-142's that were being run on #3 line
last year? When are they scheduled to appear for real, and on which lines?
And what are the plans for similar trains on the IND/BMT (Div B)?

Sorry if these topics have been recently been discussed, as I don't frequent
this group as often as I would like to ... and my news server seems to only
keep a few days of history.

This is a device to try and reduce station dwell times. When a train
arrives, the display starts counting down from 45 seconds. At the end of
the countdown, the conductor is supposed to close the doors and signal the
train to proceed.

You mean the R-110A, which reportedly was last seen on the No. 5. The R-142s
won't arrive until later this year and reportedly will run first on the 2 and 5
operating out of the East 180th St. yard.

If this is the way this system works, it goes a long way in
explaining the discrepency between the signal system's design
capacity of 40 trains per hour and the present 27 tph. It also
explains why the trains are blocked by red aspects, when they are
running at less than 70% of capacity.

There were no R-142s on the #3 line, because there have been no R-142s
delivered. The first ones ought to be coming within the next few
months. Could you be thinking of the R-110A? It ran on the #2.
