Database Designer

Design, development, implementation and maintenance of databases and
database management systems. Formulates system scope and objectives
and devices and modifies procedures to solve problems. Prepares
detailed specs from which programs will be written.

Responsibilities include database design (star schema and 3NF),
eliciting business requirements, designing the database to meet
business requirements, conducting data analysis, preparing
presentations to educate business people about issues and project
status. Will also conduct work sessions with business clients,
relating report specs to database design, preparing database sizing
estimates. Will collaborate with DBAs for database implementation,
developing mapping specs, developing test plans, documenting testing
results, offering consulting to business clients to help them
understand our data warehouse solutions better, and participating in
preliminary project definition (ie, "sales") meetings.

Plans and organizes the development of technical support protocol,
maintains operating systems, responds to system users, evaluates
software and system problems and potential solutions to application
systems requirements. May plan, coordinate and administer databases
including issues relating to security and integrity of controls.
Establishes project schedules and budget estimates. Recommends system
improvements, new applications and develops plans to improve service.
Broad authority and in-depth knowledge of systems and program
processes within the department. Can be classified as an expert in
their field. High level technical contributor; recognized as a
resource both within and outside the department. Acts as a consultant
to others in one or more areas of expertise. Competent to work at the
highest level of all phases in computer systems technology, create and
maintain project plans and follow defined methodologies. Conceives,
plans and implements original approaches to solve complex problems of
diverse scope, is able to prepare and present technical concepts to
internal audiences. Recommends appropriate new technologies for
projects. Interacts with vendors to resolve system problems. Frequent
interaction with users of project teams to establish system
specifications and resolve problems. Principal contact for complex
systems. Represents the department and / or division on systems
efforts having a bank wide impact. Trains users and other high level
systems professionals in implementation of the most complex systems.
Regularly provides technical interpretation and guidance on most
complex computing problems. Serves as technical leader by planning and
directing the work of other professionals to meet project deadlines,
technical specifications and user requirements. May be group or
project leader. May be required to evaluate other professional staff.

Qualifications

Requires a B.S. or higher degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or
related field and a considerable breadth of progressively complex
systems engineering and development experience. A self-starter with
minimal supervision required is expected. Requires the ability to
communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Given the skills,
knowledge, and abilities required for entry (not standard
performance), typical time to achieve standard performance is three
months (only for new hires / new in the department). Extensive
technical skills, project management, and professional communication
skills are essential. Additional requirements include database design
and analysis experience (preferably on Oracle). Profiency with ER/Win.
Profiency using TOAD/SQL Navigator. Proficient iwth MS Office
applications. Very strong SQL programming skills. Excellence is
required in analytical abilities, verbal and written communications
(including documentation), and interpersonal relationship skills.
Strong problem solving skills are a must.
