Hi, no idea who to contact on this but there's a
rather large (aren't they all?) Red-Tailed Hawk
living in my backyard tree.

I'm not sure but I think it was someone's "pet"
that they lost because I caught someone trying to
sneak into my yard the night before my dog noticed
the bird in the tree.

Of course instead of explaining what he was
looking for, the man and his friend ran away,
leaving me with a predator capable of eating my
cat.

So who does one contact about this? The Bronx zoo?
The ASPCA? The Audubon Society? Birdman?

Ouch! :)

You know what's ironic about that? We just got a
new barbecue (which I'll never have any use of,
I'm vegan) and the included book has recipes for
"yard bird" I was so grossed out! :)

Well, I think my feathered friend moved on, no
sight of it today luckily. It was very pretty but
any bird that can make a tree branch creak makes
me a tad wary.

I think we're running a nature reserve here, we
get raccoons, bats, skunks, now a hawk. Wow. Well,
maybe we wait long enough and they'll cancel each
other out.

Yeah, however long that may be now that I saw that
report on the news that they're being infected
with the west-nile virus. *sigh* Poor birds.

We used to get so many beautiful birds here but so
far this year the hawk was the only bird around,
now it's flown hopefully home.

Of course another thing I hadn't thought of until
Chef's reply was that some looney might actually
try to shoot the bird if it is still around. One
of my neighbor's is rather fond of his rifle, I
hope he stays indoors this year.

True, I should have said he's fond of pulling the
trigger on said rifle while aiming at passing
birds. He's a fun guy. :)

Which would be fine for him if he lived in an area
where there was more that 25 feet between houses.

I'm fond of my car but I generally don't drive my
car into other people's yards or windows chasing
after either birds or people. :)

Red-Tailed Hawks are not uncommon in the NYC area. There is a nesting
pair on Central Park East that's produced several clutches the past few
years. This is also the time of the year that migratory birds are
returning from the south which might explain the timing of its arrival in
your backyard.

Why do you need to do anything about it? It probably won't harm your cat
and is more interested in rats, mice and pigeons. It will probably also
leave on its own sooner rather than later. If it appears injured, there
is a raptor rescue center somewhere in NJ that might help. Also, you
should be aware that the Migratory Bird Act makes it a criminal offense to
harm the bird. I'd try scaring it off with noise.

So I'm finding out! It's amazing, I've lived here
a long time and this was the first one I've seen.
Beautiful looking bird, I feel sorry they have to
deal with that West Nile virus every year.

I don't, I just didn't want anyone else to.

That's good to hear.

It's gone now, I guess like you said it was
passing through.

Never seen it but my friend's beagle was attacked
by a bird once, heard it was very nasty.

NYC is actually a phenomenal place for migratory bird watching - in
particular Central Park which is a great migrant trap. Migrating birds on
the Atlantic coast flyways become concentrated in Central Park and other
spots of green around NYC because they need a resting spot. The number of
birds that would normally be spread out over an area the size of Manhattan
get packed into much smaller Central Park. During the winter it's also
possible to see what are termed irruptive birds which have been forced
down from the north by bad weather. A few years ago, I saw three great
horned owls right next to the Met. I've also seen absolutely spectacular
snowy owls sitting on the sand at Orchard Beach.

Red tailed hawks are migrators and year-rounders in the region. I drive
up to western MA quite often, and I'll generally see 10-15 individual
hawks just while I'm on the Hutchison Parkway.

: I don't, I just didn't want anyone else to.

Check. Yes, very good idea. Red tails are sufficiently common that one
individual lost wouldn't make too much difference, but it's definitely
good to keep random idiots from harming it.

No, I figured you were just being an ass about it
(like almost everyone else in that newsgroup, I
haven't seen a more bored bunch since I
graduated.) but I wasn't. It isn't funny. The
beagle (a puppy at the time) was attacked because
it got too close to a baby bird that had fallen
out of it's nest.

I actually do have a sense of humor, but it isn't
the twisted and ignorant sort.

I'm so glad I entertained you, it was great fun. I
guess. But I suppose you have the much more
advanced sense of humor so you'd know.
