Oct. 2009 meeting notes

Digital Group meeting notes – Oct. 20, 2009. Attendance 14.

Two hams that are new to our area were in attendance: Dana Roth K4MP has moved to Blaine from South Carolina, and Warren Weber KL2UR has moved here from Anchorage. Welcome!

Treasurer – we have $1419.76 in the bank.

Brian reported that W7RE has set up a new RMS server on 147.42 in Maple Falls. A couple of new Winlink servers are in the works as well.

There is an upcoming Tech license class at the American Museum of Radio and Electricity on Nov. 14 and 21 (two successive Saturdays) with an exam session on the 21st. Registration is being handled by the Museum.

DAM (non-) contest during the month of November. This is just for fun and to see how many digital modes we can use, so get those rigs fired up! Skeds are encouraged. Techs – use 2M simplex! Details on the club website (

www.mbarc.org) and discussion group.

Brian and I have set up a discussion group for the DG on Google Groups. Feel free to discuss club business or anything else that might interest the group. If you’re not receiving emails from nwwdigi feel free to go to the site and sign up. http://groups.google.com/group/nwwdigi?hl=en

Chuck reported that Clearwire no longer works on Lummi Island. Chuck also has the club antenna analyzer if anyone needs to borrow it. John and others reported on the damage from the recent power outages – a UPS at the school failed "spectacularly".

Discussion of meeting space. At some point next year the Police Department will be moving into the Ferndale Library, and we’re not sure if there will be meeting space at wherever the new location will be. Plus we would like a location where we can solder, eat, spill things on the floor, etc.

  • The Radio Museum has offered to let us use their 2nd floor classroom area if we all become Museum members ($35 each per year). Nothing was thrown, and there was no rush for the exits. Advantages: downtown location, ham station with IC7800 and VHF/UHF rig and shack computer. Several members seemed to be in favor of this arrangement. A concern was mentioned about security of vehicles parked downtown.
  •  Mike offered the use of a heated hanger at the old Blaine airport. We would have to bring our own tables and chairs, however. John suggested that we might use the maintenance shop at the school. Advantage: it has its own soldering iron! He’s pretty sure that nobody has ever tried to rent it before....
  •  It was decided to meet at the Library for November, at least, and see what we want to do from there.

Discussion of dues. Not sure why we’re collecting $20 per head if we have no expenses and no plans for the money. One option, if we go with the Museum’s proposal, is to waive club dues for Museum members. To be discussed at a future meeting.

New MBARC constitution (this is an item I forgot...) we will need to adopt a set of bylaws if the proposed Constitution is adopted by the MBARC. This can probably be a cut and paste from the existing Bylaws. Visit http://www.mbarc.org/home/member-files to see the new and old versions and see if there is anything we want changed.

Kelly KF7AFF has borrowed a 9612 TNC from the club.

Show and tell.

  • Brian showed off his new Ruckus wifi AP. It looks like something you would cook a sandwich in, or maybe something for drying nail polish, but it actually is a wifi access point that allows you to set up two different networks with the same device. Brian also showed his wifi spectrum analyzer application with an antenna that plugs into a USB port.
  • Mert showed off his Softrock SDR receiver. This is a $12 single band receiver kit that uses your sound card to decode signals, and can display a large swath of the band on your screen. Also shown was an unassembled SDR transceiver kit. Info: http://www.kb9yig.com

Next meeting is Tuesday Nov. 17, 7:00 PM, at the Ferndale Library.
