Clonezilla

Has anyone here used Clonezilla? I need to use it, but I'm having some trouble figuring it out. I bought a new hard drive for my laptop. I want to make an image of my old hard drive and get it onto the new hard drive. I don't have a USB hard drive to put the image on. However, I do have a Windows XP machine connected to my home network. I set up a shared folder on my XP machine, and I figured I could tell Clonezilla to put the image into that folder. But where I'm having trouble is getting Clonezilla to find that folder on my XP machine. There are options for SSH network connection, Samba, etc. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Haven't had an issue doing clones with it, have you made sure the
share isn't secured and XP is set to use the compatible NTLM.

The share is not secured. What is NTLM?

Xp pro has a ntlm option that can cause the samba client to fail
connect to it. Xp home didn't have the option, was under cont panel,
admin tools, security setg, and Network. Something...

NTLM is windows lan manager I believe. Is Your clonezilla seeing the
share at all? Network cables and lights on the network cards?

I also assume your using the samba option (smbfs) to connect to your
windows share?

I have tried all the options listed, including samba, and they all ask me questions that I don't know the answer to. I am at work right now, but when I get home tonight I will post what questions Clonezilla asks me after choosing the samba option.

OK, here's how far I've gotten:

I choose Start_Clonezilla. -> device-image work with disks or partitions using images -> samba_server use SAMBA server (Network Neighborhood server)

Then it asks me for "IP address or FQDN of the server. E.g. 192.168.120.254 or hostname.domainname.org" The default value in this space is 192.168.1.1. I change it to 192.168.1.101, which is the IP address for my windows machine on my home network.

Next is "Domain in the samba server, you can cancel this if no domain is set in the samba server" and I leave it blank.

Next is "Account in server, the account that you have the permission to write (for saving image) or read, Ex administrator" I leave it at the default input, "administrator" as this is the name of the account on the windows machine.

After that, "The directory where the Clonezilla image will be saved to or read from, Ex /images" I have on my windows xp machine, a directory called "C:\images" and I put that into the box.

Then, "Now you have to enter the password for admini...@192.168.1.101:C:\images" so i put in the administrator password for my windows machine

Then I get "Clonezilla image home directory home/partimag is not a mounting point! Failed to mount other device as /home/partimag! Are you sure you want to continue?" and I say no. then it gives me the option to reboot the computer or start over.

I hope this helps you see where I'm at. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I were to connect to the shared folder from inside Ubuntu, here is how I do it: I click Places > Network > Windows Network > HOME > DANIELV9J08EWK > and the folder, which is called "images"

Looks like your domain is HOME, you may want to try that.

I keep getting error messages saying device doesn't exist. I think when it asks me to enter the directory of the share, and I type "C:\images" I might need to type it a different way. I don't know. I wish I was smarter.

That should be the share name, not the winders path.

In this case, it would be /images.

I'm just going to see if I can borrow a USB hard drive from someone at work, and maybe I'll be able to do it that way.

Does /home/partimag exist as a directory on the Clonezilla machine?

It did not, so I created a directory in the home directory called partimag. I tried running clonezilla again, and got the same message.

Also everything is case sensative so if there are CAPITOL letters in the path on the windows machine that might as well cause a problem.

Could it be that CloneZilla wants the UNC path of the SMB share?  Something like //HOSTNAME/sharename?

Likely but I don't remember the interface questions. If it is wanting
that it should be \\computername\images witha login of
Home\Administrator
