Elmer MacKay's name was mentioned a thousand times during the Mulroney/Schreiber inquiry. Seems
he's was a really good pal and advisor to Mulroney when Schreiber was slipping money to
politicians in Canada to advance a German arms company's sales. And he was a very good pal of
Schreiber's as well.

Now his son - of the famous: 'calling Brenda Stronach a dog' comment in the House - is helping
his daddy get a little richer.

Is there ANYONE in the Harper Conservative government that hasn't been touched by scandal,
incompetence, or conflict-of-interest? Is this what we deserve to have sitting in power in
Ottawa?
Call an election and clean the House !!

MacKay's business holdings could be conflict of interest: Critics

Canwest News ServiceSeptember 3, 2009 2:02 PM

OTTAWA - The federal ethics commissioner is examining whether Defence Minister Peter MacKay put
himself in a conflict of interest by failing to declare his role in business operations of his
family that stand to benefit from a multimillion dollar federal investment he announced last
week.

MacKay, who is also the minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency,
announced $7 million in federal subsidies for sustainable forestry sector development that could
benefit woodlot owners such as Beaver Lumber Company Limited, which is owned by the minister's
father, Elmer MacKay. The minister was also a director and officer of the company and
vice-president of a similar business called Lorne Resources Company Limited but says he forgot
about these roles until they were brought up this week by the Halifax Chronicle-Herald.

MacKay described his failure to disclose the information as an "oversight" on his part with
respect to the Conflict of Interest Act and he resigned his positions at both companies earlier
this week.

"Because no remuneration or benefit ever accrued to me from this (Beaver Lumber) company, I did
not consider it active and indeed had forgotten about it," MacKay wrote in a letter to Mary
Dawson, the federal conflict of interest and ethics commissioner. "For the last several decades
the sole function of Beaver Lumber Company Limited has been to act as a holding company for my
father's woodlot interests."

A spokeswoman for Dawson said she had received the letter and would be following up with MacKay
before determining whether to proceed with an inquiry.

But critics were skeptical about MacKay's apparent memory trouble.

"It smells bad," said Megan Leslie, the NDP MP for Halifax. "Do you think he forgot that his dad
owned thousands and thousands of acres of woodland in Nova Scotia? I think it would be tough to
forget that. My mom's a nurse, I tend not to forget that."

Leslie said she had not formally filed a complaint against MacKay but was interested in hearing
the commissioner's findings.

"When there are funding announcements that will impact your family's life, (or) potentially your
assets, your life, we have a right to know that," she said. "This is why we have these rules, so
we know where Canadians' money is going, where our tax dollars are going and who it's going to
benefit. We want it to benefit Canadians, not just a couple of families."

Duff Conacher, the co-ordinator of government watchdog group Democracy Watch, said that Dawson
has reasonable grounds to launch a formal investigation.

"He (MacKay) obviously knew throughout the whole time that his father had a forestry company and
that his family did, and so he would then have been involved in decisions that could further
private interests of himself, his family, his friends, which is breaking the fundamental good
government law," said Conacher.

A spokesman for MacKay said he was not available for an interview and had no further comments on
the issue.

Peter came across with confident ease as he explained his way out of
the possibly troublesome conflict of interest case which will now
fizzle out as fast as it arose. MacKay might be a weasel, but he is
learning how to navigate the potentially damaging political
whirlpools. He's nearly as smooth as his mentor and family friend, the
Right Honourable Brian Mulroney.

As you can understand, The Rt. Hon. Peter MacKay hasn't been this upset since
Belinda left his side, so he wanted to rent my dog for a photo op.

But the last dog died last Winter, so we are now looking for a dog for Peter.
He's got a press engagement soon and a forthcoming election.

Call Steve, c/o The Office of The Prime Minister of Canada,
P. O. Box 001,
Ottawa, Ontario.

MacKay? Stockwell Day? Who is whom?

They look the same to me! I can't tell the difference. Can you
tell the difference?

Must be the hairdo.

Besides, nobody knows who Harper's Cabinet members are! Execpt for
you Mr. Baird.

Or should I say "Mister future Prime Minister of Canada" one day.
