Hello Cross Country Skiers in the NRV,
I've wanted to check out XC Skiing at Mt. Rogers (<1.5 hrs from Blacksburg) for a couple of years now. I got a book (Southern Snow by Johnson) and it mentions Mt. Rogers (highest point in VA) as having pretty good snow.
Also, on a visit to Hungry Mother state park this weekend they mentioned there being snow @ Grayson Highlands State park a few weeks ago. (Grayson is adjacent to Mt. Rogers).
1. Do you know anything about the snow or xc skiing in either place?
2. Do you have any interest in an exploratory trip there? It'll be an exciting adventure in route finding. Could be a day trip and/or overnight (either hotel or, if you're feeling intrepid, we could snow camp. I've done that many times on Mt. Hood in Oregon. It's nice camping: no bugs, no animals, no heat, no rain.)
