We discovered this nest in the middle of a rose bush yesterday. Haven't yet seen the bird. The eggs are fairly large, perhaps robin sized. We wondered if it was a mockingbird as we've seen one in that area of the yard.

I'd say that's not a mockingbird nest.  Mockingbirds use larger twigs to build the bulk of the nest, whereas this one has used strips of bark, and tiny twigs..

Carol,

Go to http://www.google.com/

Then click on "Images."

Type in such search words as:
mockingbird nest
jay nest
etc.

I tried mockingbird and jay and quit because the nest seem somewhat similar.
Maybe you'll see the bird. Good luck. Please let us know what you learn.

My guess is a cardinal, but it's little more than a guess since I don't know the height, or exact dimensions of the eggs or nest. I'm guessing this because it's a common yard bird, I find their nests all the time, and their eggs look like this (but are slightly smaller than a robin's egg).

My guess is cardinal because they love to nest in rosé bush masses and it looks like one.

I heard my first Acadian Flycatcher today. Also, took a walk on rock Castle Gorge, Woolwine end, and heard and saw:

Acadian Flycatcher
Blue Headed Vireo
Red eyed Vireo
Black and white Warbler
Parula Warbler
Black throated Geeen Warbler
Louisiana Waterthrush
Hooded Warbler
Redstart
Hummingbird
Red bellied Woodpecker
Pee wee
Phoebe
Cardinal
Scarlet Tanager
Woodthrush
Other various warbler sounds that we could not identify

Also, had a Yellow breasted chat in my yard yesterday which is not a usual occurrence.

Forgot to mention quite a few Ovenbirds, a bright orange eft and a tiny toad!
