t40, it says in the specs that it can support up to three

but I don't see how

I think the only thing he can do is maybe span over his laptop monitor
and another one....

Ive got a bunch of T4# series with the docking unit, they use the LCD on the
laptop as the primary monitor, & the LCD/CRT hooked up to the docking unit
as the 2nd monitor. Yea, its not as pretty as having 2 22" widescreen's on
your CEO's desk, but oh well.

Make sure you have the very latest ibm-ATI video drivers before starting.

http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/19572 might help as well.

If it's running XP, just plug the monitor into the docking station, and
like previoudly stated, use the lcd of the laptop as primary and the
monitor set off to the right as a secondary then in the display
properties, "extend" your desktop to the second monitor.

I've been doign it for years with less than optimal video cards.

I believe, and will verify, that with the T40s the options the other guys
gave are the only ones.

LCD+External.

There are external Y adapter type do-ickies, (LOL) that do not work very
well.

Matrox now have eXpansion Modules
(http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/products/home.php):

* DualHead2Go http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/products/dh2go/home.php
* TripleHead2Go
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/products/th2go/home.php

Might be worth looking at.

Yes. We tried those and they did not work well.

We may not have r&d'ed the T40s after all. My guy here says the chipset may
be the difference. But the external Y adapter do-ickey was no good, that's
for sure.

Ahh, USB, is there anything it can't do?

http://www.overclockers.com.au/article.php?id=334086

You're gonna need USB 2.0

A google for 'usb vga adapter' should give you some good relevant
results.
