Well, I went back to the consultant last week because the pain's back -
the kneecaps are rubbing the base of the femur on both legs again.
Currently in for 2 months of physio and if that doesn't work, I'm back
under the knife for a "rescoping" (I think this is where the back of the
kneecap is scraped and the floating cartilage in the joint is removed).
Good fun, just glad I have a good private medical scheme <g>

Me, too. Sounds terrible, but I do know that when they do that, it
usually feels lots better. Hope the physio works, though. : )

Just back from my second physio session, not too much impact thus far,
but early days yet.
Maybe if they just take the kneecaps out, there might be less of a
problem <g>
Awww I hope things get better I remember the surgery you had before.
*shudder* that makes mine hurt just thinking about it... best of luck
mate.

But then your leg bones would fall out! They're now giving John's
father some shots that insert fluid into his knees, to replace the
natural lubrication that has apparently dried up over time, and it's
working fairly well. Is that sort of thing something that might work
for you, or is it a case of build up of material? : )
LOL! Apparently all I'd lose would be a little bit of extension...

Mine's a couple of things - firstly the kneecaps are out of alignment,
so they rub on the bottom of the femur - this in turn leads to cartilage
wear on the back of the kneecaps, and so I have bits of cartilage
floating in the joint - nice :)
Thanks mate - consultant says I'm likely to have problems for the rest
of my natural - though with the odd bit of corrective surgery here &
there, it should be better than it was :)
Thanks - the surgery's not too bad, I just want someone to make the pain
go away :)
Thanks mate, the early results from the physio aren't that encouraging,
we'll see....

Well that's good, 'cept for the occasional surgery.

Oh the doctor can do that... or if you want a cheaper way... I'll bring
a bit mallet over. ;)

I found that, in my back surgeries, the painkillers worked wonderfully,
but the steroids and muscle relaxers actually diminished the pain
instead of masking it.....
It is easy to see how some people get 'reliant' on pain killers....
Funny... mine were constantly irritated for years, especially the left
one after the surgery. Maybe the past year of doing very little
finally gave it time to heal, because I can even run now without them
hurting like before. I'm trying to drop some more weight so they bug
me even less.
"Being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by
30-60 pounds with each step."
Keep seeing stuff like that, and I no longer question why some days I
cringe while trying to climb stairs. I'm sitting at about 40lbs over
right now. So that's like an extra 100-200lbs of force on my poor,
already damaged knees. *sigh*

Ouch. I hope they're able to repair it for you. : )
Ouch. Feel for you bud. Years of hockey and general bad habits have
pretty much messed up my knees.
Was talking with a local female goal tender the other day and she
mentioned to me that they now have laser surgery for not-bad-yet joints.
Didn't have the time to chat to get more info. Anyone know anything
about this probable miracle?

The cartilage bit will be easy - they'll just suck that out - not sure
about the reshaping of the back of the kneecap though <eeK>
Oh I dunno - at least I'll get some recuperation time <g>
Actually before the last lot of surgery, I tried lots of painkillers -
none worked :(
Though, a bit mallet? Is that like a byte mallet, but smaller? ;)
mmmm, muscle relaxers <g>
I guess while I'm having physio, it wouldn't be a good idea to have the
pain masked - otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell if the physio was
working (which so far, it isn't) <g>
Ah, so what you're saying is I should do nothing for a year? Sounds good
to me ;)
> "Being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by

Oh yeah, thanks for *that* :-P
Thanks - mine's just a natural knee alignment problem, apparently....

Nope, not heard of that one - the keyhole surgery that I had before was
very quick & easy to recover from though..
> mmmm, muscle relaxers <g>
Beer is a great muscle relaxer.

Antje had a "lateral release" (google for it, except you aren't
sadistic) a couple of years ago and she'll need another this summer. They
didn't tell me I actually had to carry her upstairs after I managed to get
her stretched stiff leg into my Smart car. Tooks weeks. Yuck.
U
Yes, after a successful Sunday afternoon down the pub, I can quite agree ;)
Don't need to google for it - that's what I had on both knees (bilateral
release) - was up an about in 2 weeks, and had no-one to look after me
either!
Sorry to hear Antje needs another one though - that's a fairly strange
parallel :(

Sure, but you are a man! You know women, they whine and moan all the time
<G>
U
LOL - I bet you typed that outside of plate-throwing range ;)
Will do :)
My physio's on holiday for Easter now, so I don't have an appt til near
the end of the month - then I've only got a few weeks until I'm back at
the consultant. Should know what the next action is by mid-May.....
> LOL - I bet you typed that outside of plate-throwing range ;)
No I didn't :-)
Seriously, it is a fact here.
U
Brave <g>
> Seriously, it is a fact here.
Other way around over here <g>
> Oh I dunno - at least I'll get some recuperation time <g>
Also didn't think about attention from the nurses. ;-)
Yes, there's that too - and the fact that the hospital I used last time
is like a hotel <g>
Well... sorta. ;)
> Oh yeah, thanks for that :-P
Sorry mate, more pointing the finger at myself... if I guilt myself
enough I do something about it. :)

Ben S.
Wow... how do I still manage so many typos? I used to have sinus
infections all the time... some family friends would always tell me,
"You know there is a cure for that."
"Yeah? What's that?"
"A guillotine..."

Ben S.
> Yes, there's that too - and the fact that the hospital I used last

Even better. <G>
Yeah - the morning after, this nurse came in with my full English
brekkie, the newspaper and asked if I'd like the curtains pulling back.
All very nice <g>
LOL :)
Hey, close enough for me <g>
> Sorry mate, more pointing the finger at myself... if I guilt myself

Just don't include me in your guilt trip thankyouverymuch ;)

'specially if she looks the way I'm imagining she does. ;-)

"Awww, comonbuddy... ya know I love ya big guy..."

How come I never get those nurses... granted your imagination could be
far better than the truth here. ;)

I never get those kinda nurses either. <G>
Heh - sweet, thanks <g>
Hey! You leave my nurse alone ;)
> Hey! You leave my nurse alone ;)
so she's sassy, eh?
Of course, aren't they all? ;)
> Of course, aren't they all? ;)
Some just more than others, eh? <G>
Yeah, some ;)
> Yeah, some ;)
Might need to check meself into a hospital soon for some research. ;-)
Just don't be taking my bed! <g>
> Just don't be taking my bed! <g>
Well that hosp would be a *bit* far for me. <G>
My nurses are safe then <g>

Yeah, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight ;)
Ne'er mind that - you seen a pic of *me*? <vbg>
You guys aren't trying to do De Niro are you? It's really bad if you are.
> Ne'er mind that - you seen a pic of me? <vbg>
That's an awful big bottle you're holding. <G>
Yup, and it was a bargain too - 4.5l of pleasure <g>
<shame>
I have no idea what you're on about mate
</shame>

You talkin' to me...........?

poor poor liver <G>
Haven't even started on it yet - had it for over a year too! Saving for
a special occasion, and drinking my Glenmorangie first ;)

You should be able to save it for a couple of special occasions. <G>

And the news is in.....
After 2 months of physio, which didn't help, I'm going in for the op on
30th May. According to the op code I've been given, this is an
"Arthroscopic meniscectomy (including debridement) – bilateral", so both
knees, under general anaesthetic, in the hospital overnight, and 2 weeks
recovery time...
http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/aha/aha_artmen_sma.htm
Thanks mate, I do too <g>
take care, hopalong...
--
Shaun Pond
Thanks - doubtful there'll be any hopping going on for a while though ;)
Dan C.
<vbg>
I wasn't saying I'd WIN....
Thanks mate :)
After the op last time, the improvement was massive and lasted quite a
while - just a shame that the pain's back.
Still, if this one doesn't work, then there are other options available....
Good, good, cos then I'd know you were losing the plot <g>

TMI perhaps? <g>
Nah, thanks - I've every confidence in my consultant, and last time I
was pretty much recovered in 2 weeks :)
Yup, next in line would be a procedure to reshape the back of the
kneecap, add a plastic button to the kneecap & a metal strip to the
bottom of the femur....
Knee replacement isn't an option yet - I'm too young apparently.
Basically, the replacements only have a limited lifespan, which would
guarantee repeat surgery every few years - this way, by trying less
severe options first, we have more of a chance of preventing repeat
surgery....
"I'm going in for the op on 30th May" ;)
<g>
Oooooo...fun! NOT!
Good luck Michael!
Oh I dunno - pretty nurses, nice food, change of scenery, shouldn't be
too bad <G>

Thanks mate :)
Oooh, now that would be something.....;)
