Hi All:

Just wanted to let you know that the Joomla project is officially able to take part in Google's Summer of Code program. This is really exciting because we've actually been down on the count for the past 2 years. We're looking for some great mentors this year, and so I am hoping that there might be one or two talented folks on this list who would be interested. If you are, please check out this group:

and sign up under the mentor forms. Spread the word too! Thanks!

The April 19 meeting will again be in Burke, VA . May 24 will be at PICnet in DC.

For April's meeting, unless anyone proposes a topic they prefer, I am thinking of using Jen Kramer's Joomla! Start to Finish:  How to Plan, Execute, and Maintain Your Web Site as a jumping off point for discussion.

Her book provides guidance for intermediate-level developers of sites for customers, rather than being a "where to click" type of book for beginners. Although it was written assuming 1.5, a lot of her tips for development are timeless and I am sure that many of our group would find them useful. Maybe we can even get her on the phone line, but it's not absolutely necessary. I will pull out tips I like to a set of slides and we can discuss whether or not they work for you.

If someone wants to do a different program, please say so!

Dorothy,

I like this proposal. I think that most of those J. developers who
attend the meetings are _intermediate-level_ users or are likely soon to
become such "intermediates."

Please see my comment below.

Yeah, I am interested in hearing more proposals, too.

Not a lot of discussion, huh? Was that program OK and I should post it, or are there alternatives?
I need to put it together then... though I would love to hear other topics..

Hey, Bruce, did you get any takers on that 1.0 site?

Not a single query, Dorothy.

As for Jen, if we could get her to join us virtually for ANY meeting it would be a very welcome attraction. If she can't make it this time, maybe some other time this year?

Other topics...I mean, I could maybe walk through a simplistic 1.5-2.5 migration on a Linux VM if anyone would be interested in seeing that. Sure could use that SUPHP thing Danie talked about several months ago working, but I was never able to accomplish it. So I'd also demonstrate my fumbling with two user identities, the account owner and the Apache web server daemon. Might be entertaining to some, though how useful is anyone's guess. ;) Don't know if GTM would work while viewing a VirtualBox VM screen, but I don't see why not.

In other news, PostgreSQL looks to me to be getting awful close to ready for the CMS. Also, the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) project is a great boost for Joomla! and if anyone is willing to mentor some students, please reach out Chad.

Bruce, it’s funny you should mention that suPHP issue. I just encountered that on a client’s server hosted at LiquidWeb. I built a site in my devel area, and intended to restore it on his server using Akeebabackup. Man, I encountered problem after problem getting it to restore. For me, Akeeba has worked pretty flawlessly since the first time I used it, so I had to read all his documentation before I found a little footnote about how it will not work without suPHP installed. (Of course, I didn’t send in a support ticket lest I experience Nicholas’ wrath. J ) Fortunately, I was able to get the LW folks to install it in no time. It helped clear up some other permissions related issues that I encountered on his main site that I didn’t realize was related as well.

Also, I like the idea of using Jen’s book as a framework for discussion. Seems like it would be a good topic for users and even us vendors.

I've got some PowerPoints made up... picking my favorite items!
Basically, it is too bad her publisher doesn't want it updated, it's a great book though from 1.5.  Time to make it an e-book? I am sure Jen could take it to 2.5 with ease!

Gang,

Does anyone know of a Joomla utility that can reset the ACL permissions across the board to the Joomla default? I’ve got a site that I’m working on now that’s been upgraded from 1.5 -> 1.7.3 -> 2.5. I did the last update.

Somewhere along way, the ACL permissions got pretty hosed up. To the point where, at the document level, a whole bunch of documents are configured like below, where Public edit access is allowed. Of course, this trickles to registered users down the line. I’ve checked the Global permissions (all default – Not Set), the permissions on the Category and Article levels and I’m stumped (there, they read Inherited – not allowed). The same problem existed in the 1.7.3 version, even with NEW documents. This is was the default.

Though, after I upgraded to 2.5, this issue was resolved with the new documents. However, I’ve still got a ton of existing documents that are impacted, and there’s no manual resolution. Which is why I’m looking for a global reset-to-default utility.

Thanks,

Gene

I don't know of any utilities for that, but you could do some sql queries to reset those. I had to do that when I did an upgrade and the permissions got all messed up by the JUpgrade extension.

I don't recall the exact queries I used, but I think it was this forum post that got me started:

Thanks,
Don

Ooooh, thanks Don. I suspected I could do this on the SQL side. I believe the 1.5 -> 1.7 upgrade did use JUpgrade. I’ll check this out.

I don't know if you can use the straight sql to get it back to the defaults, but you can get them so that they are editable and viewable by the appropriate groups.

In the #__assets table, there are two fields (lft & rgt) that can't be updated by a straight/single query. But you can set the rules field so that those items are set to be editable and readable. That is what that forum posts gets into. So, it works although the lft and rgt fields aren't what they would be if it were from a clean / new install instead of the JUpgrade upgrade.

We had invited Jen Kramer to speak at our June meeting.  However, she has a conflict with the usual meeting date on June 21st.

I have the Kings Park Library for the 21st but can't get it any other day that she is available.

Do we want to (a) be virtual (b) find another location, (c)  shift Jen to September (her next availability)?

My recommendation:
Have Jen Kramer speak at a virtual meeting on June 14th (the Thursday before our normal meeting date).

(Jen can do the 14th, 19th, 20th, or 22nd. I can't do the 20th. She can't do the 21st or 28th. Her July and August dates corresponding to our meeting dates also have teaching gigs and so are conflicts.)

Please let me know if you agree or if you prefer another alternative.

Thanks!

OK, we're on for the 14th, virtual, with Jen.

Now for topics - she's willing to talk about Joomla 2.5 ACLs or languages... which would you prefer?

I vote for ACLs.

No, changing the date I could not get the library. I suggested that we do it as a virtual event unless someone has a better idea. I will put out a GoToMeeting and we can do it that way.

Now, we still have the library on June 21st if people would want to see each other... I wouldn't mind, but would not have a program prepared.
