Go get it! I am having a blast learning to use the new Search features. You should be able to do a 1-click update from your 1.7.3 sites, but as we all know, do a few clicks before that to take a backup.
There’s also an update to a version 1.7.4. Think of that sort of as a spare tire—fixes some security issues in case your template has a blowout with 2.5. You don’t need update to 1.7.4 first.

If you have a 1.7 site up, you really should upgrade to 2.5 sooner rather than later. Support for 1.7 will end just one month from today. There should minimal or no issues running 1.7 extensions in 2.5, but you should check with the developer first.

My 2 bucks (inflation and our economy):
1.5 to 1.6 et seq is an upgrade/migration, and can be a pain in the butt depending on what you have for extensions. I view migration from 1.5 as an opportunity to refresh the template, because it takes quite a bit of doing to modify the template for the new series and if you’re going to do that, you may as well go the rest of the way and consider whether the design should be upgraded too.
1.6 or 1.7 to 2.5 is an update. One click. No pain. Extensions that don’t work are either impacted by bugfixes or poorly coded to begin with.
Always get a backup before you do any of this.
