Cruisers and catamarans take hit in US budget cuts

Seven Ticonderoga-class cruisers and two Whidbey Island-class landing
ship docks (LSDs) are to be retired early by the US Navy, Defense
Secretary Leon Panetta announced on 26 January. The Department of
Defense (DoD) has also cut eight Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV)
catamarans from the navy's five year shipbuilding plan, Panetta said
in a preview of the Pentagon's 2013 budget statement.
