Scalability is an important quality attribute for many web applications. The
most difficult to scale part of the web application to scale is its data
storage. In response to this, many new systems for scalable data storage
have emerged. These systems often loosen consistency guaranties in favor of
more
scalability, availability and partition tolerance. For applications
requiring a
high level of consistency, such as Online Transaction Processing (OLTP)
applications,
alternatives for massive and elastic scalability are fewer and less well
understood.
This work investigates the options for scalability and consistency.
