Free Concerts and Jazz Workshops on the XU campus

New Orleans, LA - The Xavier University Jazz Festival is a three-day
event hosting various genres of the jazz art form. The event itself
will host an evening concert series with a day scheduled for various
clinics/workshop lectures. The Evening Concert Series will
specifically have themes featuring guest artists in performance with
the final evening concert hosting a jazz master with the Xavier
University Jazz Ensemble. The final evening will begin with a Clinic/
Workshop Day featuring well established jazz artists presenting
various topics of the jazz genre.

The purpose of the Xavier University Jazz Festival is to present to
the XU students and the New Orleans community a varied range of jazz
related clinics/workshops and concerts featuring world-class jazz
artists. The Clinics/Workshop Day will be designed and structured for
the junior/senior high school student and will offer opportunities in
educational presentations and performing participation. The Evening
Concert Series will present world-class jazz artists performing a
three evening series of concerts where the final evening will present
the Xavier University Jazz Ensemble in concert featuring a renowned
jazz master as soloist.


DAY ONE
April 21, 7:00 PM
Traditional Jazz Day
Dr. Michael White and the Original Liberty Brass Band

Traditional Jazz Day will begin the festival with an evening concert
featuring internationally acclaimed Traditional Jazz musician Dr.
Michael White and his Original Liberty Brass Band. Dr. White is a New
Orleans born Traditional Jazz musician and historian who has received
international recognition as a lecturer, historian and musician
presenting the music and history of original New Orleans Traditional
Jazz. The Original Liberty Brass Band has received numerous
performance awards and has traveled the globe presenting New Orleans
Traditional Jazz in most of the world’s leading jazz festivals.


DAY TWO
April 22 – 7:00 PM
Vocal Jazz Day
Germaine Bazzle Group

Vocal Jazz Day will follow the opening night of the festival and
continue the concert series by featuring one of the premier vocalist
of the New Orleans area, Ms. Germaine Bazzle. Ms. Bazzle is featured
as a soloist and has traveled internationally as a vocalist of the
modern jazz repertoire all of her life. Along with performing with her
own quartet, her resume includes giants in the jazz community such as
Ellis Marsalis, Harold Batiste, George French, Alvin Batiste and a
host of others. In addition to performing, Ms. Bazzle has been a music
icon and educator for several decades in New Orleans area schools.


DAY THREE - AFTERNOON
April 23 -12:00 PM
Clinic/Workshop Day
Featured Guest Artists in Lecture

The festival will begin its final day of the concert series with a
Clinic/Workshop Day presenting a series of various one hour lecture
presentations, featuring renowned jazz artists/clinicians beginning at
12 noon. The day will open with Traditional New Orleans Jazz History,
Techiques and Nuances, featuring legendary Traditional Jazz Historian
and Musician, Dr. Michael White.

The second hour will continue with the lecture series with Vocal Jazz
techniques featuring Ms. Germaine Bazzle discussing various aspects of
vocal jazz when considering interpretation and improvisation.

The lecture series will conclude with Advanced Jazz Improvisation
featuring jazz legend and saxophone great, Mr. Bill Pierce discussing
various aspects of improvisation as it applies to Jazz.


DAY THREE - EVENING
April 23 -7:00 PM
Xavier University Jazz Ensemble featuring Bill Pierce

The evening concludes the concert series and the festival with its
final concert featuring the Xavier University Jazz Ensemble with Mr.
Bill Pierce as soloist. Pierce has an outstanding resume that spans
the jazz world for the past thirty years. He has performed and
recorded with jazz legends such as Art Blakey, James Williams, Freddie
Hubbard, Tony Williams, Wynton Marsalis and a host of others. He is
featured at major jazz festivals across the globe and is presently
Chairman of the Woodwinds Department at the Berkley School of Music.


All concerts and workshops are free and open to the public and will be
held in the Xavier Music Department Recital Hall. For more information
