Baltimore City Commissioner of Health Dr. Oxiris Barbot announces a series of public meetings where community leaders and concerned residents can learn about Healthy Baltimore 2015, the citywide vision for improving health in Baltimore. These meetings are a first step in the Health Department’s effort to help residents prioritize community health needs and identify potential strategies for reducing their impact.
The department is scheduling 14 meetings (one in each city council district). Dr. Barbot and senior Health Department staff will share new, neighborhood-specific health data, including information about mortality, chronic disease burdens, and how the health of a neighborhood is impacted by factors including access to healthy food, healthy housing, quality schools, and safe places to be active. The data is taken from the 2011 Neighborhood Health Profiles, a collection of 55 reports released in December which reveals stark inequities in health outcomes between city neighborhoods.
“At these meetings, we will demonstrate how our built environment – the places where we live, learn, work and play – has as much to do with making us sick as it does with keeping us healthy,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “Ultimately we hope communities will use the information presented to take action in designing new strategies and interventions for tackling the top priorities they identify for creating health promoting environments.”
All meetings are free and open to the public and the media. Following a data presentation, there will be time for questions and answers.
“We believe that listening to the community is the first step toward working together to reduce the impact of these health concerns,” Dr. Barbot said. “Enhancing the health of our neighborhoods is fundamental to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s vision for a healthier and growing Baltimore.”
Each meeting will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will feature a health resource table. Some neighborhoods are represented by multiple council districts; these data will be shared at each district meeting.
