"What makes Chestnut the best jazz pianist of his generation is a willingness to abandon notes and play space." - Josh Tyrangiel, music critic for Time Magazine (2006)
American jazz pianist, songwriter, and producer Cyrus Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche, though his gospel sound is apparent on a number of his recordings. A Baltimore native, he started his musical career at the age of six, playing piano at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. By age nine, he was studying classical music at Peabody Institute, and in 1985 earned a degree in jazz composition and arranging from
Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, Chestnut was awarded the Eubie Blake Fellowship (1982), the Quincy Jones Scholarship (1983), and the Oscar Peterson Scholarship (1984).
Chestnut toured as pianist for Jon Hendricks, 1986-88; Terrence Blanchard, 1988-90; Donald Harrison, 1988-90; Wynton Marsalis, 1991; and the Betty Carter Trio, 1991-93. His association with Carter, which began in '91, significantly affected his outlook and approach to music, confirming his already iconoclastic instincts. Carter advised him to "take chances" and "play things I've never heard," Chestnut says.
In 2006, Chestnut released his first album Genuine Chestnut on TelArc Records.
Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist who lives in Baltimore. Since he was very young, Warren has been playing many different instruments: vibraphone/marimba, drumset/percussion, and piano/keyboards. As a
youth, Warren attended Peabody Prep, where he studied with former BSO member Leo LePage. While at Peabody, Warren played many popular styles of music which included Classical, Jazz and Ragtime.
After graduating from The Baltimore School for the Arts in 1997, Warren enrolled at Berklee College of Music, where he studied with Caribbean Jazz Project Vibist Dave Samuels. While there he began to experiment with many different music styles outside of jazz and classical, such as hip-hop, r&b, drum-n-bass, funk, rock, gospel, world music and, Latin.
Warren has played and record with many of the worlds best musicians, including Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Nicholas Payton, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Christian McBride, Terri-Lyne Carrington, Bobby Watson, Roy Hanynes and Danilo Perez.
