Hi,

I am sprucing up my kitchen (new paint, accessories, etc.) I have solid hickory cabinets that are about 25 years old. They are still in great condition and so is the finish, albeit, they are looking a bit dingy with the grit and grim from everyday cooking and steaming. Do any of you have a suggestion on what I can do or use on them, that might help bring them back to their original shine? I do not want to strip, paint or refinish them just clean and shine them. My reason for asking is because a “tried” suggestion that has worked for you, is far better than “trial and error” from me that might harm the finish.

Thank you for any suggestions and please respond off this list.

Hi, Pam -- My contractor cleaned ours with denatured alcohol and very fine gauge steel wool.  That improved them a lot.  Our cabinets needed a bit more work than that though, so in certain areas he did revarnish them.  They look good now with a nice finish.

Hi Pam. It must be that time of year, because I just did some research
online about the best way to clean the grime off of wood cabinets. And
(very similar to Grace's contractor), the most common and effective
way I've found is by filling a spray bottle with 1 part alcohol and 2
parts water (be sure to test a small area 1st to make sure it doesn't
ruin the finish), spray the cabinets and wipe down with a microfiber
cloth.

Good luck and happy cleaning!
