Hi,
Just to let Melbournians know that we've decided to end Node Night but still run a user group under another name - 'polyhack'. If you attended the previous night you are welcome to this one (first one sceduled for the 23rd of August at Inspire9).
We made the change for the following reasons:
* we have always intended to be a hack group, not a presentation focussed group. We felt that the meetup page obscured this. There was some confusion from newcomers wanting the presentation format.
* a lot of us want to discuss ideas about other programming languages and techniques, under a polyglot heading. So Node will still be very important, but if you're working on clojure/scala/go/whatever or want to discuss logging frameworks, etc., we want the group to service that.
* Node has some presence in Melbourne (and is growing) but it isn't as large as Ruby or Java, etc. at the moment. And running a typical language focussed, presentation format user group to keep newcomers happy was a bit hard for the core membership.
We're deliberately not creating a
meetup.com page for this (which goes back to point 2). We just want to have a fun hack group where people can show each other code, explain ideas, and occasionally present if they like.
So come along to the first Polyhack at 6:30 pm at Inspire9 on the 23rd if you're interested. I'll be presenting on *something* (unsure if it'll be a Node.js topic or a Clojure one). Mark Wolfe is hopefully presenting too. Otherwise it's just messing about with code then going to The Corner afterwards at 8 pm.
Cheers,
Nicholas
