Subject: NodeJS Job Offers
As node gets more popular, some startups and other crazy folks are
deciding to use it for "real" things.

Like, jobs, with funding, and business plans, and employees and stuff.
There are also real companies using Node for things behind the
scenes.  I hear rumors of Yahoo doing stuff with it, and Joyent
employs Ryan and Orlandov, so I know they've got some node stuff under
the hood.

How would you guys feel about seeing job offers on this list?  I worry
about it being an annoying spammy type thing, especially since a lot
of recruiters tend to be overly aggressive.  ("Oh, there are
javascripters there?  Come work on this rails+jquery job!")

But what if it was strictly a job working with NodeJS?  Would that be
something you'd want to see here?  Should we create a separate list
for that so that it doesn't clutter the extremely focused and super
strictly serious seriousness of this list? ;)

I ask because I know a guy who's trying to hire node people, and he
doesn't want to be a jerk and inadvertently ostracize the very people
he's trying to recruit.

I say let anyone post any node.js related job offers they want.

If they start spamming, just moderate the message and block the person in
question from posting to the mailing list.

Personally I think its fine to post jobs here. Perhaps when we reach a point
of critical mass and the job posts are actually getting "in the way", then
we roll out a nodejs-jobs list.

I'd say allow it with the caveat that it may need to either be
disallowed, moderated, or moved to a separate list if its gets out of
hand. In general it gets annoying when job postings turn in to 300
message threads about the compensation/expectations/etc. Maybe allow
it if its something like "Job/Company/Location/Link to more
details/Please reply off list if interested."

Recruiters and spammers seem to share a lot of genetic traits.

That said, I'd like to see node-based job postings here.  Not only might it
help a noder get a job, but it also lends more legitimacy to the node effort
in general.

Keep it on here until it gets out of hand. It would be good for contributors
and devs to see how node is used in and perceived by the business world.

Maybe we could encourage people to prepend a subject tag, like "JOB:",
kind of like how we do "PATCH:" for diffs and "ANN:" for
announcements?  That way at least it'd be easy to filter and search
on.

I'd love to see node job offers.  But let's keep job offers tagged with [JOB OFFER] or something similar in the subject line so that it's easy to filter out for those who might think it's more noise than signal.

The BayPiggies list had (possibly still have) an interesting policy about
this.

Basically, if you're developer and you and/or your company are hiring for a
position you are free to post it.

Professional recruiters at companies and third party recruiters are not
allowed to post positions.

That seems like a pretty sane policy but it is optimized for a problem we
currently don't have.

Well, I know I'll be posting a few jobs on here before too long, so I'd like
to see a decision on how this should work.

Personally I like the idea of keeping it in this list for now and just
requiring job offers be marked with JOB like ANN and PATCH.

Out of general curiosity and as someone who will also be hiring soon,
I'm curious what the "other language" mix is here.  How many pure-js
folks (wouldn't take a job if it required another language) vs ruby vs
python vs ...?  This seems like it would be relevant to anyone looking
to hire noders in a not-only-node-yet position.  Would this be better
as a wufoo or docs survey?  Has it been asked before?

I imagine node+anything would be fine. There's clearly a wide array of
skillsets here, so why not. I think the key point is that it's *node*+x.

From what I've seen here, most noders have a background in Ruby. I'm one of
the few that don't.

I have done a bit of Ruby, but my background is mainly PHP (against my own
better judgement) and Python (yay!).

My job offers won't require any particular experience other than node, but
Python/Ruby skills would probably be beneficial.

Funny timing on this discussion.

WeShop.com is hiring some Node in NYC.

Gist is you synch your email, WeShop finds when you buy things and how much you paid, then finds you cheaper deals and facilitates order cancel/return.

A bunch of other applications as well like auto ID'ing shared interest groups based on product buys and then facilitating group rate negotiations, etc.

I just started there but they seem like good guys, have legit funding, legit crew,  and an entirely too spacious office at 31st and 5th.

Hit me up if you want to chat on it or know people who are awesome and into Node.

I'll also be at NYC.js later

Thanks.

So, I've had the idea for a node-related job site for a while, mostly due to
my observation of client demand for real-time development and the lack of
Node-specific opportunities.  After seeing this thread I decided to take
action... So last night I hacked together a job board site.  I'm offering it
to the community for free as is.  No frills, no profiteering, etc.  Just a
simple "post and read" site, ala Craigslist style.

http://NodeJobs.com

My tenants are:

   1. Keep it free;
   2. Promote all things Node;
   3. Help foster community growth;

Post to either the forum or the site, both instances would show up on the
job board.  Group posts that have the tag "JOB:" is in the title will
automatically show up on NodeJobs.com.

Perhaps this would help foster awareness, legitimacy, ecosystem, community,
etc.

Thoughts?
