This might not be the best place to post this, but will the nodeconf videos be available?

NodeConf has just finished, I think you will have to wait more than 3 hours to see them :)

By the way the conference was spectacular :)

If the last nodeconf is any indication, it'll probably be several
months until they're released. They do a lot of editing and whatnot to
get them all ready.

:-( I was hoping to catch the node-mysql live coding - heard that it was a super-session! I hope they don't edit too much out of it.

I haven't even seen the last nodeconf videos, because I forgot about them after a similar thread like this.
Maybe anyone collected links?

We spent a lot more time and money on the videos this year. It will take some time to edit them but they will go up.

One problem we had was that the HDMI capture device totally shit the bed. This means that for the "live coding" portions of videos we're going to have to make a rough cut, send it to the presenters, and ask them to do a screen capture that recreates the live coding :( so some of those might not be up for a while.

This year, all the videos will be hosted by us. It's not up yet, but it'll be http://2012.nodeconf.com

Thanks.

We spent a lot of time making sure the quality of NodeConf was higher than almost anything we'd seen.

When the videos were done and we started running through them some of them didn't meet that quality standard. It had nothing to do with the recording quality or the speaker or the talk, some talks just don't come off nearly as well as a video than they do as a talk, especially when they include audience participation.

We edited 3 videos that translated about as well to video as they did live. We're considering a few others, we'll see what they look like after editing. The rest I won't release, they aren't good enough. To me, there's no point in releasing a video about something you could read about unless it's amazing and actually conveys the ideas better than you could read them in text. NodeConf isn't like other conferences, we don't do things just to do them, and we put more resources in to these videos in order to convey the ideas of the speakers as well if not better than what we saw live.

You can view the videos we have done here:

It may seem strange for us to record all the talks but not release them but this is actually exactly what TED does, so it's not unprecedented.

For NodeConf this year we don't have traditional "talks", we're doing hybird hands-on sessions and some other activities, so we won't be doing traditional recording at all. We'll be shooting video all day in order to construct a short documentary about NodeConf 2013 but the format doesn't really allow us to record anything that could convey the sessions.

Hmmm, maybe it was superior, I wasn't there can't really say about it. But judging by online materials - videos don't even have a titles, and failing to find an average videocam nowadays - that looks somehow strange ....

Just Rick's, i'm trying to figure out why. Firefox is the only browser that doesn't support h264 which is really annoying.

Well, almost.

I can go to the doctor for free, but I've paid taxes in order to do so.
I get 1000 free minutes from my carrier, but I'm paying for a
subscription.

etc.

My point is, many times what we get for free now, is the result of us
paying in the past.

This has nothing to do with nodeconf, just wanted to say this because
I feel sad when people don't demand high quality for stuff they've
paid for (even implicitly) without realizing it.

Nah, *nodeconf*was*not*free*, so they must have forgotten to save some bucks for the online videos?

And *he* came saying "(our)Conf was higher than almost anything we'd seen. (...) (our)Conf isn't like other conferences (...)" blah blah blah, but, @ JSConf there are many good talks and the videos are online... how's nodeconf any "higher" than that?

One that's so much better than the rest that doesn't even release any videos, hahaha.

FYI: tenconf.s3.amazonaws.com is throttling -to Spain, at least- @ 20-25kB/s so it's ~ impossible to see any of them (285MB/25k -> +3 hours).

Did you actually read what I wrote?

I *could* release all the videos. I *won't* because they don't meet my standards. I won't release a video of a person standing in front of a screen talking if it doesn't convey their ideas as well as seeing the talk in person did. It doesn't do the speaker or their ideas justice.

Why do you think that just because there was a talk at a conference that you should get a video of it? Why should every video need to be released?

I do 10 - 60 minutes interviews with people for videos I put up on http://www.futurealoof.com. I don't release the whole interview, i release parts of it. Some parts don't get released, many of the questions I ask don't get a concise enough answer to put up, so I don't. It's better this way, it means the videos that do go up mean something.

If you don't like how I run my conference, don't buy a ticket, or run your own conference. Nobody that attended last year told me that they didn't have a great time.

Wow. This thread got pretty ridiculous, didn't it? I'm really disappointed.

People who put on conferences take on an absurd amount of
responsibility and put in an inhuman amount of work, and often end up
losing a considerable amount of money in the process. If they do make
a profit, it tends to get invested in the next years' conference. No
one's getting rich running conferences in the Node community. They
deserve your respect, even if you disagree with their decisions or
priorities. We are lucky.

NodeConf was not free, it's true. It was paid for in part by the
attendees, and to a large degree by the sponsors. Those who did pay
for it generally seemed quite pleased with their purchase. A lot of
lasting value was provided FOR FREE to everyone in the node community
who didn't attend. If you have a problem with NodeConf, email Mikeal
Rogers off-list to discuss it. Same goes for EmpireJS, LXJS, Node
Dublin, et al. Take your problems off-list.

This list is not for expressing disapproval. Especially disapproval
of content that you are getting for free, provided by someone else at
personal expense. Same goes for conferences, open source libraries,
etc.

So, here's a new rule for this list: You have to be nice. You are not
allowed to make rude comments about anyone or anything. Even if
someone specifically asks, "Hey, do you like express (or coffeescript
or promises or whatever)?" and if you happen to NOT like that thing,
you must couch your disapproval in the most respectful language
possible, acknowledging what might be its strong points, and you may
ONLY do so if explicitly asked. Or better yet, just don't say
anything.

The next person to break this rule gets permanently banned without
warning. It will be swift, and not open for discussion.

I am sorry to get all kindergarten about this, but really: If you
don't have something nice to say, say it somewhere else (or just
don't).

If you wanna complain, do it productively, like a grownup, in private,
with the person who you actually have a problem with. If you want to
complain like a child, then that's what Hacker News is for. This list
is different. The Node community is different.

I don't care about losing a few people who spew bad energy. I care
about losing all the newcomers who see a bad-energy-geiser, and decide
that Ruby or Python are more their speed.

If you think I'm talking about you, you're probably right. Don't say
anything to defend or apologize. I don't care. Just stop spewing bad
vibes, and don't let it happen again.

If you think I'm not talking about you, that's fine. Make sure you
never fall into this category.

Thanks.

i guess conference organizer's are the ones that watch the videos (sarcasm)

this post started a few months ago and still only a couple of videos have come out ... as someone very interested in watching them, it is disappointing not being able to because Kubrick is taking his sweet time in post production

so yeah, in my "humble" non-conference-organizer eyes it looks like it shouldn't take that long if they are actually meant to be published

Post-production takes a long time :). Plus figure in that conference organizers usually have jobs, consulting and other obligations, families, kids, dogs, maybe occasional court appearances, etc. Even if you're not uploading all the videos you might have done post for all of them :).
