Help setting up Nodal

G'day from Australia.

I have just purchased Nodal (for Windows), and to say that I am
impressed is an understatement. What a great little program, with
awesome potential for the serious and not so serious composer.

Music technology over the years has certainly changed hasn't it :)

In 1975, I had the pleasure of working with Felix Werder on the EMS
Synthi 100

The Synthi 100 was developed from a combination of three VCS-3
Systems, ending up with 12 VCOs, two keyboards (each of it duophonic,
making it possible to play 4 voices simultaneously), and a 3-track 256-
step monophonic digital sequencer. Two 60 x 60 matrixes were used to
connect the different modules by using patch pins. The keyboard spread
could/had to be adjusted, making it difficult to play a tuned
temperated scale for a longer time, but allow for alternative tunings
easily.. All this cost over $15,000 Australian in 1971.

I want to compose some ‘serious’ pieces using Nodal to drive some
software. In particular I am interested in writing a real time piano
improvisation as well as a programmed ambient piece.

HELP

I hope some Nodal user can help me with the setup.

I have the following setup

Windows 7 Professional (64 bit operating system)
Intel Core TM i7 CPU
24 GB Ram

The sampler/sequencer software that I use is

Kontakt 5
Fl Studio
Adobe Audition 5.5

I want to use Nodal to play (using it as a sequencer)

1. Kontakt directly as an instrument/s

2. FL Studio instruments and Kontakt as in instrument via Fl Studio.

To be honest, I haven’t got the foggiest idea of how to do this.
Haven’t got a clue. I am not as young as I used to be (now sixty four)

I hope there is some kind soul out there who can assist.

If the setup up is complicated, then I would be quite happy to send
some money via paypal for assistance.

Hi Paul

The rough and ready answer:

- To get Nodal to 'speak' to another application, you will need to
link it to that other application using a 'virtual midi cable' such as
midiyoke or loopbe.

I use midiyoke with windows xp, so will explain using midiyoke:

- Install Midiyoke (note: once installed you will notice that it
doesn't appear in the programs list - don't worry!)

- Open both applications i.e. Nodal and FLStudio (for example)

- In the inspector (info panel on right), click on the instrument tab
(saxophone symbol) and select the instrument you want to use to
control your other application e.g. orange.

- Under port, choose a midi yoke e.g. Out to midiyoke:1

- And choose a channel e.g. 1 (see below port)

- Under the Document tab (in the inspector) under MIDI sync outputs,
select another midiyoke number e.g. Out to midiyoke:2

Now the rest will be dependent on what other application you are
using, but essentially the other application:
- will now be receiving midi note values from a particular Nodal
instrument (e.g. orange) via midiyoke 1 on channel one
- and will start and stop play (sync) when Nodal is started or stopped
via midiyoke:2 (or whatever no. you set it to).

Hope that helps a bit. I don't have Kontakt but might be able to help
you further if you get stuck.

Hi Paul,

I don't use Fruity Loops or Kontakt, but Brendon is quite right in
that you need a loopback 'virtual midi cable' to use Nodal on PC. (Mac
users have it easy in this respect - they don't need extra software).

Essentially, this is a bit of software which allows you to send the
midi data out of one program (in this case Nodal) and in to another
program (Fruity Loops, or whatever).

Although Midi Yoke appears to be XP only from the info on the
developers website, the XP version will run fine on Windows 7 64bit.
Here's the website: http://www.midiox.com/ - Some people have said it
is necessary to disable UAC on Windows 7 to get it to install. See how
you go.

Wow, thank you for the links. I downloaded Loopbe30 Monitor and
installed it.

Initially I was very frustrated because I selected the midi channels
in the monitor, not realising that in selecting them I was muting
them! I had some problems with feedback also.

Now Loopbe30 is working perfectly with Nodal and Kontakt 5

I will try and get Fl Studio working with Nodal in a few days.

I put a graphic in the FL Studio Midi controller forum, under Paul's
post there, that shows the essential elements configured. I don't
have Knotakt and so used Fruity LSD - a multi-timbral GM midi player.
