Hi All,
An update on Nodal developments. We are currently working on the 1.9 release of Nodal, which will incorporate a number of new features, many of which are based on suggestions posted to this group.

We don't have a scheduled release date yet, but we will release beta versions for testing first, via the Nodal web site (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~cema/nodal/), and I'll also post an announcement here when the beta versions are available.

Thanks again for your continuing support of Nodal, its only through buying a licence that we are able to support continued development of the software.
Regards,

Jon

Music made with Nodal:

Here's a reminder of my suggestions:

SUGGESTIONS:

- Having some MIDI modifiers would be nice, transposing options for example.

The concept of keys and modes will be available in the next release, so you can use relative pitches that conform to a particular key and scale, rather than just the chromatic tones that Nodal currently uses.

Each time the note is played, it can be changed by a specific modifier (transpose, velocity, etc).

This is already possible using the +,- * and / modifiers in the node editor (see the manual for examples).

- Macro editing, like selecting various nodes at the same time for transposing the notes, or doing
 other editing.

You can already select multiple nodes or edges and apply edits to all of them simultaneously. However, things like a global transpose are currently not possible.

- Trigger Timeline Interface inside Nodal would be cool. This is already possible,
using an alternative set of nodes just for triggering, but not in timeline fashion.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. If you mean trigger different events at different times, you can do this already using "don't play note" and edges of lengths corresponding to the delay required.

- Forward / Rewind calculation - this complex operation would be interesting:
the software calculate in what repetition of what node you will be in, let's say,
the 3rd minute from the begining of the piece. Like a forward / rewind control.

Calculating forward is possible, rewinding to an arbitrary time efficiently is extremely difficult, so it is unlikely that this feature will eventuate. Due to Nodal's generative nature, plus the possibility of random nodes, fast forward and rewind means that the network may be in a different state at the same point in linear time, meaning rewind doesn't have the effect you traditionally associate it with it.

In this way, you can jump to a specific time of the composition without having
to wait till there. When you jump, the program calculate what happened before
and what is left to happen. This would be closely related to the timeline stuff.
- Rewire - after this forward/rewind stuff, the next step is going rewire for a better sync with other softwares.
- VST would be nice, but not essencial.

We have looked at a VST version of Nodal in the past, but unfortunately this would require more resources than we currently have to implement it.
If enough people are interested in having a VST version, we could look into it again for the 2.0 release.

Thanks !

Julio Herrlein
