I watched a news story on the cost of a Thanksgiving Dinner. Walmart can package a complete dinner for $20. It is very personal why I want to do this and I really do not need to go into it but I plan to go into Walmart and buy a couple of dinners to give to families. I want my friends to join in with me to buy a family a Thanksgiving dinner. I am looking for an organization who can help distribute the dinners.

Kenneth –

I really appreciate your kind thoughts, IATSE Local 480 is working with Women In Film on their Food Drive in conjunction with Sunflower Markets, a number of production companies, Channels 26 & 27 and we’re currently looking for a radio sponsor. We would be happy to arrange distribution; unfortunately we have a policy that WalMart is not available to us due to their corporate policies (3 billion profit and not one penny in taxes in NM, etc). We could suggest several Union grocers including Smiths and Albertsons. If you want to work WIF they will be soliciting donations outside of Sunflower Markets beginning next weekend, we are hosting an event during at December Nob Hill Shop & Stroll, and several other events before Christmas. If anyone would like us to deliver a collection box to their business we would be happy to do so. This is part of our Film Makers Give Back program  that so far this year has raised over $100,000 for charities such as those involved with children at risk, the O’Keefe Museum, the Santa Fe 400th, Big Brothers Big Sisters, food banks in Roswell & Las Cruces, etc. If there are others in the business doing similar things as you are and there is a video file we would be happy to post it on our website which will go live the beginning of January. Thanks again for your great idea.

Ken, I agree. Let's do it with some other store. The WIF project sounds good to me.

American Legion Post 80 in Grants would be happy to help distribute in
this area. Here is a video about their efforts (they just did a Turkey
Run to raise money):

Ken,

Back on October 3, I covered an event at the Noon Day Ministry where members of the cast of “Crash” and members of IATSE Local 480 (Jon was there) donated a Saturday meal for the homeless. “Crash” had used this venue for some of their filming and it is laid out especially for meal service (kitchen, serving lines, ample tables and chairs, etc.)

Here’s their website: http://bit.ly/A0VLK

There’s a link to a photo gallery of the event if you’re interested. Might want to talk to Danny Whatley, the Director about how some of their cost for a Thanksgiving meal can be offset by donations of dinners. I’m in for a couple.

I also wanted to throw this out there, that I've donated & volounteered
at Joy Junction before, and places like that, as well as Roadrunner Food
Bank and Albuquerque Rescue Mission can generally provide a Thanksgiving
meal for far less than $20. Many of these places are also eligible for
employer matching contributions and of course they are tax deductible.
