In particular, GoDaddy and/or Comodo?  If not these, who?  I have read many mixed experiences on GoDaddy and Comodo.  This is only for a Standard SSL need.  I kind of like the looks of GoDaddy’s “up to 5 domain” deal for $90/yr.

Comments appreciated!!

I've been using RapidSSL for several years and have no complaints.  Even when I've screwed up the certificate generation, they have been pretty good about helping out.

I had forgotten about them!  They claim single root which I like as I have read that GoDaddy’s are chained.  But, the question is will the GoDaddy at less than ½ the RapidSSL cost of $70/yr work just as well in practice?

Yes, the GoDaddy certs are chained. I have setup several sites with
the GoDaddy certs and haven't received a complaint yet... Including
one local site that has a few thousand active users.

I think that with a coupon I got that certificate for $12.99 for one
year.

I've also used RapidSSL's wildcard certificates before. I have no
complaints with their service either, no trouble at all.
