I am visiting NJ in the next couple of weeks and staying in Hoboken. Whilst
in the US I would like to go to Washington DC and any information on Public
Transport from Hoboken would be of value. I have an idea of going by train.
Any ideas on how much it will cost going one day and returning the next
(staying in DC overnight). If the train costs are too high maybe the
Greyhound Bus is an option but how long does this take? On either option
would I have to go over to N.Y.?
Car hire - I would like to hire a car for, 4 - 5 days to go into New
England. Are there plenty of local car hire operators in the Hoboken area
and how much would I expect to pay? The insure angle in the Us seems
confusing. I would expect that CDW and SLI insurance are recommended
options but what would I expect to pay, per day, for car hire. I have the
option of pre-booking a car in the UK before I leave but this is for 14 days
and will cost me some 360 USD per week, including CDW and SLI, unlimited
mileage, but this seems a might over the top when I expect we only want a
car for 5 days.

You're certainly not off topic. Most of the other junk here is though...
The only thing I can offer you from your questions is relating to the car - I
assume "car hire" means a rental car from the way it was worded. If so, and if
you have a gold credit card or higher (I'm assuming, of course, that UK credit
cards are similar to US ones) then most of these will cover the insurances on
the rental car for you and you can waive the insurance. Check with the card
provider first....

Washington has an excellent sub way system. It goes to most major
attractions and it is the way I travel when I go. If you have a car you
can go to a stop just off the belt way and interstate 95 and catch the
subway train into the city. I think it is call greenbelt but I am not
certain of the station name. The subways is very clean and runs often.
This is they way I go to Washington. Amtrak is probably the fastest and
on a one day trip if you do not have a car. Amtrak probably the
recommended way to make the trip. Check for any specials. They have an
800 number if you like long waits but they are helpful once you get their
attention.

You'd have to go by Amtrak. Check your phone directory for them
(anywhere in the US -- it's an 800 number) so you can get fares, etc.
Most likely you could pick up the Metroliner in Newark (or a regular
one). From Hoboken you can take the PATH train to Newark. It's also
possible to take the PATH to Penn Station in NYC to catch the Amtrak trains
there as well, but more costly.

I would not recommend the bus. Train information can be found at
You can catch a Path train from Hoboken to Newark and pick up Amtrak there.
Otherwise you can take a Path train from Hoboken to 34th street and walk a
couple of blocks to Penn Station.
The train station in Washington is next to the Capitol.

There are many car rental places in the area. At the worst, Newark Airport has
basically everything. Unfortunately, you are better off renting the car out of
the area. The rental companies charge more for the NY area and Florida.
