Hi Rusty,

You've done a commendable job of prototyping nitrogen in Erlang, but
when can we expect an implementation in a real language such as Java?
Is "Enterprise Nitrogen" being worked on in a secret repository? And
can we expect this in 2009?

The only thing preventing my team from using Nitrogen, is that it's
not yet enterprise. Furthermore it's also lacking an associated
certification program. If I hire a Nitrogen programmer, how can I be
sure they are not some random hacker?

Tom, I hope you are joking/being sarcastic. The last thing erlang or
nitrogen need to move toward
is "enterprise" or slow, overcomplicated crappy applications. I
worked at an international bank and believe you me, enterprise is NOT
what you want. IMHO this is why erlang is such a breathe of fresh air.
It does concurrency right and is simple enough to understand without
having to slog through reams of shitty threading code, mutexes, locks
and all that other "enterprise"
crap. Just my 2 cents...

Dear Tom,

I have done Java for 12 years before, you name it - 3,4,5-letter word, I got it all, except for JAIN, JSLEE and the likes that I have not gotten into yet.

The last 2 years with Erlang means that all my previous Java stuff are just craps. This is 'the real enterprise' that you need if you're talking about > 5 nines type of application.

Noted that there is lack of certification out there, but certs are just certs - paper! You want a piece of mind when deploying your services. Have you tried to do cross-site scripting in Erlang, or buffer overflow attack?
Tough luck in Erlang I must say ;-)

Cheers...

to Nitrogen Web Framework for Erlang
Hey guys,

Putting April Fool's Day aside, this is actually a timely thread.

*DRUM ROLL*

I've been in talks with Microsoft about moving Nitrogen to F#.

They described some strategic factors around this interest:

- Their development tools are big moneymakers.
- They see the market shifting toward functional languages.
- If they don't shift too, then Visual Studio revenue goes away.
- Their best bet for riding this wave is F#.
- They realize that putting F# on the web is the only way to do this.

Apparently, they have seen the buzz around Erlang and Nitrogen, and
have decided that an F# implementation of Nitrogen best aligns with
their goals.

I know this is going to cause some concern here. I'm happy to talk
about it, but for legal reasons I can't share all of the details.

The Erlang version of Nitrogen will still be open source, and I will
still be updating it, though the updates may slow down for the next
few months.

Best,
Rusty

to Nitrogen Web Framework for Erlang

Hi guys,

I should have known better than to announce this news on April 1st.
Nobody will believe me until I bring it up again tomorrow.

Maybe this will help, after some conversations with John Allwright
(Head of Web Design and Development at Microsoft), I asked him to post
something I could share with the group.

Here are the details: http://bit.ly/4kb77v

Best,
Rusty

p.s. Part of their strategy is to attract existing Erlang and Nitrogen
users as early adopters, so hopefully you don't _really_ think of
Microsoft as the evil empire.

F# Finally some real progress!

Very welcomed news. As most of you probably know, I'm the principle
director of an open-source F# platform called Oxygen. Oxygen is a
hyper-grid cloud platform, actively used for solving NP-Complete
serialization patterns. In short, this could make Nitrogen really
fast. I host this product under my esteemed 'Combustion' umbrella
corporation.

Perhaps we can bind Nitrogen and Oxygen together? Branded as Nitrogen-
Oxide, and a product of Combustion.

OH MAN

I knew what was going to be behind that link, but I clicked anyway.

First time I've been snapped with that for A1 this year.
