hi,

There are a couple of things which i noticed in GSOC 2013 this year.
According to the event timeline, student application dates open on the 22nd of april and close on the 3rd of may.
Now from 4th May to 6th May, mentoring organisations rank the student proposals.

Can anyone please clear these doubts for me:

1. What do they mean by mentoring orgs rank student proposals?

>>>>>>Do the mentoring organizations rank the student based on repute or previous commits made by the student? Or is it just based on the proposal that they have made.

2. Slot allocatioons are provided to orgs on 8th May, are these student slots or mentor slots?

3. 9th May to 22nd May, slot allocation trade starts : what's the trade?

>>>>>>(dramatic style : after all this years, even google trades with humans :'( :'(   :P  )
On the serious note, it says "Mentoring organizations review and rank student proposals; where necessary, mentoring organizations may request further proposal detail from the student applicant.", but they did they not already do that from 4th to 6th May? why again?

Anyone please cater to these questions. Eagerly waiting for it.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi,

I am not a ex-GSoCer. Hence all the answers below are based on what I
have read about it.

What they mean is that this is the time when mentoring organizations
need to come up with list of students whom they are interested to
accept. The way mentoring organizations decide will change from
organization to organization. Some might give more importance to your
commits and some based on your proposal and interaction over mailing
list and IRC.

I guess these are the students slots that each project can get. So if
there are lot of proposals on one project and very few on others, the
organizers might decide to allocate more slots for first project. My
assumption is that this is where the organizers tells exactly how many
interns can individual organizations get.

This is probably to ensure that if a student has applied for more than
two organizations, then which organization does he/she get selected
for. This is the trade between the organizations. Also if few
organizations are given limited slots, then to choose amongst students
they have shortlisted, they might want to discuss more with the
students.

Hope it helps. All the best.

Each mentoring organization has their way of assessing a student
application/proposal. These may include past history of interactions
and contributions, the all around feasibility of the proposal, the
communication undertaken and so forth.

These are, in effect the number of projects an organization can offer
under the GSoC for that particular year.

The "trade", which you so over-dramatized has multiple meanings.
Students often apply to multiple organizations - these need to be
settled out. Sometimes the ranking doesn't result in a clean top 'x'
proposals. Mentors and organizations can then go back and have a
conversation using the Melange system to work out all aspects of the
proposal and assess feasibility of completion.

GSoC has a high number of student drop-outs and, organizations don't
want that to happen. The timeline thus allows the organizations to
hedge their risks appropriately.
