It's been quite a while since I've written, and a lot has been happening. I've nearly finished a saxophone quartet with tape for a show here in Paris on February 13th - just some mixing left. And I'm getting started on the piece for harpsichord and Baroque violin - both amplified - that will be turning up all over the Twin Cities at the end of March. So, in order:
1) Omie: I've taken three words from a tape of my great-grandmother talking about her (our) family history, and turned it into a 10-minute work for sax quartet and tape. It'll be performed on Friday, February 13 in Aubervilliers, a suburb of Paris as part of a region-wide classical saxophone festival called Saxophones en fête (http://www.soufflez.net/index.php/component/content/article/212-actualite-concert/865-saxophones-en-fete). The concert is at 8pm at the Espace Renaudie, 30 rue Lopez et Gilles Martin, in Aubervilliers, and costs 10 Euros (5 for students). It's a diverse concert, with other concert works by my computer music teachers (Jean-Yves Bernard, http://bernhard.free.fr/ and Jonathan Pontier, http://www.jpontier.com/Accueil.html) and also some pop and rock by my classmates Pierre Berndt and Marie Reynaud.
2) Nuevos Misterios: A whole suite of events is being planned for the last week of March in Minneapolis-St. Paul to roll out Nuevos Misterios. We'll (that's me and Flying Forms, http://www.flyingforms.org, who comissioned the piece) have a Schubert Club Court Room concert at noon on Thursday, March 26th. On Saturday the 28th, there'll be a house concert, and then on the 29th, the formal premiere at House of Hope Church in St. Paul at 4pm. Plus community events galore.
3) I am honored to have been awarded a Composers Assistance Program grant administered by the American Composers Forum (http://www.amc.net) to purchase equipment for Nuevos Misterios - pedals, amps, microphones, all that. It's very very nice to have some support!
4) I also won an ASCAPlus award. (http://www.ascap.com/ascapplus/index.aspx)
5) Also coming up this spring will be the premiere complete performance of Rising, http://www.nissimmusic.org/music/rising.shtml in New York City, by the Columbia-based ensemble, Worldmuse. 7) At the blog (http://www.nissimmusic.org/writings), not much recently, but plenty about Japan and also about the pitfalls of finding a compositional voice.
8) One of my new projects is arranging - let's see if I can get this right - an Andalusian-Arab song from Algeria for a collection of classical string students and amateur traditional percussionists. I've chosen to work with a tune called "Yelha Wurar," which is full of great stuff, including the opportunity to add some loops Philip Glass and Steve Reich would be proud of. I've decided to include, as this newsletter's bonus, a recording of a traditional version of the song, performed by Idir (http://www.idir-officiel.fr/index.php)

Ça fait un peu de temps depuis que j'ai écrit dernièrement, et il y a beaucoup à raconter. J'ai presque fini un quatuor à saxophone avec bande pour un concert ici à Paris le 13 février – il ne me reste qu'un peu de mixage. Et je commence une œuvre pour clavecin et violon baroque – tous les deux amplifiés – qui sera joué partout dans les Twin Cities de Minnesota fin mars. Alors, les infos, en ordre :
1) Omie : J'ai pris trois mots d'une cassette de mon arrière-grand-mère qui parle de son (mon) histoire de famille, et je les ai transformés en une pièce pour bande et quatuor à saxophones. Le concert aura lieu à 20h le 13 février à l'Espace Renaudie (30 rue Lopez et Gilles Martin, Aubervilliers). Ca fera partie du festival, Saxophones en fête (http://www.soufflez.net/index.php/component/content/article/212-actualite-concert/865-saxophones-en-fete). Ça sera un concert varié, avec d'autres œuvres « classiques » par mes profs de musique électronique (Jean-Yves Bernard, http://bernhard.free.fr/, et Jonathan Pontier, http://www.jpontier.com/Accueil.html, et aussi du rock et chansons par mes collègues Pierre Berndt et Marie Raynaud. 10€ / 5€ tarif réduit.
2) Nuevos Misterios: Tout un tas d'événements sont prévus la dernière semaine de mars à Minneapolis – St. Paul pour lancer Nuevos Misterios. Flying Forms (http://www.flyingforms.org), qui ont commandé la pièce, le jouera dans un concert au « Schubert Club Court Room » à midi, le jeudi 26. Le samedi 28, il y aura un concert studio, et finalement la création formelle sera le 29 à 16h à l'église « House of Hope » à St. Paul. Il y aura aussi des interventions dans la communauté …
3) J'ai l'honneur d'avoir été présenté avec une bourse du Composers Assistance Program de l'American Composers Forum (http://www.amc.net) pour acheter de l'équipement pour Nuevos Misterios. Inclus : des pédales, des amplis, des micros, et cetera. Je suis très content d'avoir un peu de soutenance !

5) Aussi, cet été : la création complète de Rising (http://www.nissimmusic.org/music/rising.shtml) à New York, par l'ensemble Worldmuse, basé à Columbia University. 8) Finalement, un de mes nouveaux projets c'est à faire un arrangement d'une chanson arabo-andalou d'Algérie pour un groupe des élèves de cordes classiques et un groupe amateur de batterie traditionnelle. J'ai choisi une chanson qui s'appelle « Yelha Wurar » qui est pleine de bon matériel et la possibilité de créer des boucles dont Philip Glass et Steve Reich en seraient fiers. J'ai décidé d'attacher, en bonus de ce bulletin, un enregistrement de la version traditionnelle de la chanson, interprété par l'artiste Idir (http://www.idir-officiel.fr/index.php).
