The peaceable kingdom was active  last night.  A bear attacked our 3 hives.  Fortunately they were inactive and Hilary did not raise any bees this summer so there are just hive pieces.  A neighbor has some hives and  her bees have been cleaning out our hives.  Time to pick up the feeders
hives.  My son saw a black bear strolling down his driveway early this A M.  I realize this is not strictly avian info but bees, and bears are interactive with birds.

Swallows still have 3 nests.

The New Hampshire Premiere of the Flyway of Life movie will be shown Thursday evening 21 August at 7 pm at the Rialto Theater on Main Street in Lancaster, NH. The movie was filmed in multiple locations from Costa Rica to New Hampshire and west to Churchill, Manitoba. We will see birds and iconic wildlife species including polar bears and gray wolves. The focus of the movie is on the importance of the Atlantic Flyway.

The producer, Tomas Koeck, will introduce the film and answer questions at the end of the 70 minute film. The event is free and we hope to see you for a night at the movies.
This is a link to the movie that is sponsored by the National Audubon Society and Canon. The Weeks State Park Association is hosting the event.

This is a trailer to the film.

Thank you to everyone who answered the call. The unknown animal was a Porcupine. I had never heard one before so it was completely foreign to me. Thanks again,

Thank you for the correction. I should've looked closer. The Laughing
Gulls were in the same area as the Bonaparte's Gulls.

Hoping someone can identify what animal is making this sound. I’ve been hearing them from my living room window and back deck from roughly 10:30-11pm. I had a Barred Owl calling not long after so I was able to put the audio clip on an eBird checklist. Definitely sounds distinctly different than any young Barred Owl I’ve ever heard. From through the window I thought they were Blue Jays at first. Thanks in advance,

PORCUPINE!!! Very romantic! They court in the fall- and it's quite a ritual! You're lucky it was so early- Ours prefer 2 AM!

Get ready for more!

Porcupine. It's getting close to their mating season (late Sept - Oct) and
this is an unhappy female telling a potential suitor to buzz off. Males
make a similar but lower-pitched call when arguing with other males.

Pretty much ditto for Franklin.  SE winds are often not as popular to a nighhawk as SW winds.  All birds moving north in flocks of 23, 11, 9, and a singleton.
Tomorrow's weather forecast calls for both rain and NW winds, both taboo to a migrating nighthawk.  Saturday will be the best day of the season so  far based on both date (1,388 last year) and weather.

Not much action this evening--almost as many spotters (7 folks) as
nighthawks (9).

It could be wet tomorrow, but the weekend forecast is for warmer temps and
favorable wind direction. We'll keep our fingers crossed...

My swallows are down to 3 nests from a max of 15. I miss the morning chorus from the fence line!
