I currently use dial-up to connect to the internet.

At some point, I need to go to at least DSL.
Once I have DSL, or some other broadband, I'll likely ditch the local phone
company and move to VOIP.

Are there any good VOIP companies?
I've seen folkes swear at and swear by Vonage.

Which are best?

What about going thru Comcast? Seems more expensive.

How does one get such reports?
Do they offer a backup dial-up line?

So far the only outages were the odd no email which was on the Comcast home
page.

I had phone service back before I had power after the ice storm.

And when we had an issue (forget if it was bill related or something else),
my husband got off the phone to report that was excellent service - pleasant
person, knowledgeable and actually helpful.

Well the only way you can be sure is to actually use the service. Also
know your calling habits because theres no use for getting a 10,000
minute plan if you seldom make outgoing calls. Check out Onesuite.com
as I get very good service and rates from them. It's pay as you go and
I like it that way because my usage varies from time to time.

Outbound is pay as you go at 2.5 cents per minute. Rates to other
countries varies but to give you an idea, Canada and China is around 2
cents. UK is 2.5c I think as most European countries. India about 8
cents.

Onesuite rates page here -> http://www.onesuite.com/rates.asp

Uncle!!!!!

I dood it!

I took Comcast's triple package.

More reliable than broadband as not affected if computer or router is down.

I decided to transfer my main land line number to Comcast.
Alas, this delays implementation until next week, as Comcast will not
activate any of the changes until the phone gets transferred.

I'll be paying $3 per month for the phone modem, but I am still going to use
my own cable modem.

Bye thee waye, a similar plan is available from Cablevision (owned by
Comcast) in NY for about $20 less per month, and, in NY, there is no monthly
$3 fee.

I have only 1 room with a telephone wall jack and a cable connectiom.
What does Comcast do to the wall jack?
I ASSuME that Comcast also unplugs the line at Fairpoint's interface jack.

I'll cancel my 2nd land line after I check everything out,
