President Obama tried to boost the party faithful in the Granite State
using Tuesday’s aggressive debate performance as a key rallying cry
despite almost no bounce in early polls across the nation and in key
battleground states.
“The performance was strong, but it could be that the president did so
dismally the first time and Romney was so credible,” said pollster John
Zogby, who warned that it’s at least a day too early to know for sure if
Obama’s comeback is sluggish. “Basically, the real issue would be: Has the
bleeding stopped? And, essentially, aside from the Gallup poll nationally,
it seems as if it’s still holding in place more for Romney.”
Gallup’s daily polling of registered voters for Wednesday, released
yesterday, had Romney holding a lead at 48 percent with Obama gaining 1
point after the debate to reach 47 percent, suggesting the president’s
engaged performance and some Romney slips in the prime-time faceoff may
have chiseled at the GOP challenger’s two-week surge but have failed to
blunt it so far.
Suffolk University pollster David Paleologos said the debate, which
featured a more energetic Obama, still didn’t have a clear winner and that
is likely to be a factor in the polls.
“When it’s not as lopsided in terms of the post polling, then it’s going
to be a measured bounce. It’s not going to have the same magnitude that
Romney’s did,” Paleologos said.
The first poll to be released that includes the post-debate period, a
Rasmussen poll conducted Monday through Wednesday, shows Romney holding a
2-point lead, 49 percent to Obama’s 47 percent.
Meanwhile, Gallup’s seven-day average of likely voters has Romney gaining
1 point to 52 percent and Obama holding at 45 percent.
The
realclearpolitics.com average of national polls Oct. 7-17 has Romney
leading 47.6 percent to Obama’s 46.9 percent, reflecting a wide range of
polls in which the former Massachusetts governor reversed the prevailing
trend by as much as 12 points. The polls show Romney making inroads among
independents in key swing states to change the dynamic and send Obama’s
supporters and liberal bloggers into a panic that the incumbent doesn’t
have what it takes to win re-election.
But Obama didn’t let those figures deter him yesterday, mentioning his
fiery faceoff with Romney at least four times during his 20-minute stump
speech in Manchester, N.H.
“Mitt Romney’s trying to sell you a sketchy deal. We don’t need a sketchy
deal, we know better,” Obama told the swing-state crowd of roughly 6,000.
“I believe in you. I need you to keep believing in me.”
