I was in the Metro Museum of Art in New York...its hard to believe what
passes for art nowadays. eg, a see-thru vacuum cleaner

There is no life like the life of a distinguished artist... you don't
have to do anything more than throw stuff around to make a buck. =)

Helen Parsons Shepard is a very accomplished Newfoundland artist who has
done beautiful work that you (and definitely I) would probably find more
interesting. The artist's name has a lot to do with price, but even in
something at first glance that looks so inherently boring as a bunch of
bottles, there are things that can seen if you look closely.

Not Picasso-like subliminal messages of wild and wanton sex or the
hopelessness of life, of course, but how she has treated lighting and
contrast. How she's been able to deal with refracting of light from the
bottles in the back, the effect of light on the background - at first
glannce it looks "purple", but if you look closely, even in this not
very good jpg, you can see huge numbers of different colours combining
to make that "purple".

A lot of times, art is about how something is rendered, more so than
about the actual subject. If you can look closely at something and see
what it's made up of (a basic version of this is next time you look at a
woods, just try looking for and identifying all the shades of green and
other colours that aren't even green) you can really marvel at the skill
of the painter.

That said, if I paid that much for a painting for my living room, I'd
prefer the subject matter be a little more dramatic...

OK, fire away....

Yeah but I learned how to do that in an $80 art class at MUN. They teach you
to stare at the bottle (or in my case, a metal dustpan) until you see that
it is not "blue" (or purple in HPS's case). And seriously it wouldn't be
hard to paint those bottles, especially after a little practice. Sure, she's
an artist and sure her name means a lot in the world of Newfoundland art but
if YOU had $10 000 to blow an any piece of artwork would you chose this one
or something else?
(*shakes head*, $9 5000)

Wow! Beautiful. and with only 4 months under your belt.! { Sheesh, I could
only dream of any better than my 'stick people' and chaulk drawings for the
kids. } You should bring them to a gallery and get an exhibit of your own.

If you can paint something similar to that painting after only taking one
$80 art class, I for one would be very impressed...
