Description: Bird lovers in Newfoundland & Labrador

First Osprey at V. Lake
There were two Ospreys flying around and landing in the trees at Virginia Lake this morning. One landed in a tree right in front of a window of a house on the north side of the lake. Hopefully someone was there to take a picture with their phone. dsmith

Codroy Valley May 16-20 2013
Ken Knowles, John Wells and I made a Codroy Valley trip May 16-20. most of the 16th and 20th taken up by driving. In a nutshell very slim pickings. Cold. Birds late. Only six species of warblers. Common to fairly common were Yellow-rumps, Black-throated Green, Palm, Black and white and Northern Waterthrush. Also had three Blackpolls. The only vireo Blue-headed was back in numbers. We tried two nights but did not get woodcock but they were cold windy nights with very little bird activity.... more »

More on Whimbrels
It's been suggested that I was being a bit elitist when I mentioned the Long Beach Hudsonian Whimbrel, and some folks might be a bit confused about what I meant. In North America there are essentially two races of Whimbrel. There is a third Asian race which can basically be discounted round here.... more »

Little Egrets (2), Fair Haven
I saw the 2 Little Egrets this morning in the estuary at Fair Haven and was joined by Clyde Thornhill not long afterwards. One of the locals told me they often are seen a short way up the brook nearest Route 203 where they go to loaf (and perhaps to roost?). I was able to see the two egrets were there from the road when, although they took flight to the estuary when I got out of the car. I hope they remember to watch out for the power lines when they're flying back and forth between the brook and the estuary. That same local also told me that he has seen this pair of birds nearly every spring since the late 1980s!? An amazing pattern of occurrence, if his identification and memory are reliable.... more »

Weekend round-up
Richard Thomas reported a tern (probably Arctic) on PCS beach on Friday. Also 7 Black Scoter including 4 males with their big yellow knobs - hence not Common Scoters - in Biscay Bay. And one adult Red- throated Loon in summer plumage there too. Tony Power had a Numenius sp. at Long Beach on Saturday, which caused... more »

Pond road CBS- storm petrels, terns, eagle
Made a quick trip to CBS after seeing Anne's post about the petrels. Nothing in chamberlains. Pond road had 10 petrels 500 yards out along with 2 terns flying around with nesting material and a juvi bald eagle getting bombarded by gulls and crows. BK

Little egrets, Fairhaven, Mon. May 20th
When Keith and I arrived in Fairhaven this am. at 7:30 there were two little egrets. They were on the shore line just off from the old bridge. This is just to the right as you arrive in Fairhaven. One of the egrets had a drooping wing, as was originally reported. Both birds appeared healthy. Other birds we saw in the area : Northern Harrier, two greater yellowlegs, two fox sparrows, a grouse and many robins. Also of interest was a moose, a fox and two rabbits.... more »

Another Egret
One day last week, a neighbour of Cliff Doran's was fishing offshore St John's, when a strange bird landed on the boat and stayed all day. It was described as being the size of a Noddy (i.e. Fulmar). It was pure white with bright yellow legs and a long pointy dark bill. MY initial thought was Cattle Egret (allowing for some plumage... more »
