Ken Knowles, John Wells and I made a Codroy Valley trip May 16-20. most of the 16th and 20th taken up by driving.
In a nutshell very slim pickings. Cold. Birds late. Only six species of warblers. Common to fairly common were Yellow-rumps, Black-throated Green, Palm, Black and white and Northern Waterthrush. Also had three Blackpolls. The only vireo Blue-headed was back in numbers. We tried two nights but did not get woodcock but they were cold windy nights with very little bird activity.
The one rarity was EASTERN PHOEBE on Red Rocks Road on May 19. It was getting earthworms off the road. That is how cold it was. We saw flurries and sleet but no accumulations of snow.
Two drake Eurasian Wigeon and a drake Common Teal feeding in tidal flats near mouth of the Grand Codroy River were interesting. Three pairs of Piping Plovers at Cheeseman Prov Park.
STEPHENVILLE CROSSING checked on 16th and 20th
At least 20 adult Black-headed Gulls in nesting mode. One drake Eurasian Wigeon. 11 Caspian Terns. Hundreds of Common Terns. Five noisy Willets.
Saw the 50 cm of snow on the ground in Gander area - unbelievable. Also good looks at the two Little Egrets at Fairhaven.
