MVA w/injury SUV vs. Pedestrian (Electric Wheelchair)

On 2/7/12 at 10:06a.m., Newton Police responded to a report of a
pedestrian (who was operating an electric wheelchair) having been
struck by a motor vehicle in the area of Trinity Street near the Water
Street (Rt. 206) intersection.

Upon arrival, it was learned that Margaret Contos, age 76, of Mill
Street, Newton was crossing Trinity Street in a southbound direction
(NOT within crosswalk) in her electric wheelchair when she was struck
by Barbara Miller, age 61, of Franklin who was proceeding westbound on
Trinity Street in a 2004 Hyundai Sante Fe.

As a result of the collision, Contos sustained head trauma and was
flown to Morristown Hospital by Medivac. Miller was uninjured.

Accident is currently under investigation.

Officers invovled: Ptl. Shawn Burke, Ptl. Steve VanNieuwland, Ptl.
Jose Morales, Det. Joseph D'Annibale of the Newton Police Department.

Newton First Aid Squad and Atlantic Ambulance responded to the scene
with St. Clare's MICU 514.
